About this listen

A remorseless ranger. A sentient hell hound pelt with a penchant for pyromania. An irksome pixie who sells intrigue and information.

Three companions who find themselves trapped in a city filled with warring priestly factions, devious machinations, and an angry fiend. To save the city, they must find three weapons of power, which lie in the most trap-laden, monster-infested place this side of Acererak's tomb: White Plume Mountain.

As a D&D player in the Forgotten Realms setting, I've always wanted to dip into the Greyhawk series, so bought this book as a first step, highly enjoyed the story, it's standard fantasy fare, but does some world building, can't wait to get into the next book.

Great introduction

I only recently began delving into D&D, playing with a few friends, and finding that audible had a few stories in the genre was a welcomed sight. I found myself lost in thought a few times listening to this story, which is a testament to the writing, (but not so good for me as I like to walk about when I listen). I got the second volume as well, so I'm eager to listen to the next tale of these characters on a new adventure. Overall a good listen.

Story well written. Reading is full of weird accents, which are supposed to be British, but sound totally stupid. The story satirises D&D and the fantasy genre realy well, if you know what you're looking for.

An Amusing Tale

I really enjoyed this book. Narrator does a great job with the various characters and tone of the book. Onwards to The Temple of Elemental Evil.

Good start to the series

Good voice-acting by the narrator, some memorable characters,.... The adventure-story is standard D&D fare but enjoyable nonetheless.

Truly enjoyable adventure

Old school fans of D&D - in particular - will love this. Whilst it's not in the same league as the Drizzt or Dragonlance books, nor is it convoluted or dragged out. The author handles the Greyhawk world in a smart and refreshing manner. The story is neat, compact and well structured. D&D fans will love the name checks of all their Monster Manual favourites. Above all, it harks back to the early days of the game when you spent most of your time wandering around dungeons, getting into fights and avoiding traps. Even the D&D great mentioned above don't do this sort of thing nearly often enough.

A lot has been said about the narrator's appalling accents. It's true and there's no getting away from it. Two of the main characters drift between Scottish, Irish, Geordie and Australian - sometimes in the same sentence! However, I do not consider this a show-stopper. It's a fantasy story - so weird accents shouldn't be out of place. Besides, the author's normal voice is fine.

Highly recommended for fans of the genre. I'm starting the second book now....

Players of AD&D will love it

funny cavalier fun with great characters. cinders is great. the only criticism in the narrators voice for some of the characters,.,.. dreadful Scottish and Irish type accents make an appearance. especially for the pixie,.. dear god a dreadful voice\accent. otherwise great rip roaring adventure.

very enjoyable

Don't attempt an accent if you can't do it convincingly. Story was better than the person reading it.

Best narrator by far!

Light and easy, silly fantasy. Characters were fairly one dimensional although they had some nice gags and some development. Plot twists were somewhat obvious but never the less an enjoyable light story elaborated from a D&D setting. Narration let it down however, overtly accented with one or two painful pronunciations.

Tongue in cheek
