About this listen

Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history. He turned to the first page and read:

I, Strahd, Lord of Barovia, well aware certain events of my reign have been desperately misunderstood by those who are better at garbling history than recording it, hereby set down an exact record of those events, that the truth may at last be known....

He caught his breath. By all the good gods, a personal journal?

Good dnd story worth a listen!

While not fully in the “world” of dnd it does do a wonderful job of conveying the feel of a good campaign villain. Enjoyed all of it!

Packed full of useful info for DMs

It was very informative, but loses momentum in the final act. Didn't enjoy the reader

worthy for DM and Players

intrigue ,romance and consequence paints Strahds history.
An important tool to be used by DMs and an important point of view for players who take pleasure in understanding villains.

worth a listen

I enjoyed the story it definitely put some back story to such an iconic d&d villan and deep insight in to who he is altho the other characters seem to be a mere after thought but still a good listen.

Definitely worth a read

A must-read for any dm planning to run Curse of Strahd. This book gives a very detailed insight into the character and motives of Strahd von Zarovich and into history surrounding the setting for the module. I recommend this to anyone seeking inspiration on how to deliver an authentic gothic horror dnd game and to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre.

A slow starter

Struggled to start this as it appears very slow and dry to begin with, but gives fantastic insight into one of D&Ds most popular villains.

Its a fun listen that seems to go by quite quickly after Act I (the chapters are split into several acts) and I found it really enjoyable to see things from Strahds perspective. I think the author did a phenomenal job at making Strahd skirt the line between man and monster. Even when at his most deplorable, his actions have understandable reasons and Strahds own code of honour plays heavily into HIS (edited from 'my') actions. Overall the book manages to portray him as a much more complex creature than I had expected, with occasional kindness or sentimentality showing through.

I think the narrator did a great job overall, with an amazing portrayal of Strahd. As per most male narrators, he struggles with female voices a bit but they are mostly very good. Unfortunately however, I found myself being torn from my immersion during certain scenes that were more dramatic in nature, as they were performed quite awkwardly I feel, leaving me feeling more amused than the intended shocked or sorrowful. This is where the ability to portray women dips drastically, in my opinion.

Despite this minor issue with the narration, I think he did a fine job. Unfortunately, with a woman being at the centre of Strahd's story, certain key moments of his story fell flat. But I cant stress enough how much I enjoyed his portrayal of Strahd.
