Too drawn out

This is the first Dean Koontz book I have listened to although I have read a number of them. Whether this was the difference I don't know, but I was disappointed with Whispers. It was a decent story but seemed to be drawn out. Too much pointless dialogue in my view which would slow the story down. Shame really as the story was good.

A good listen story but...

A good listen story but...you will have to suffer through some toe-curling sex descriptions (pink flowers, turgid nipples, his hardness, etc). In addition Dean Koontz is unfortunately unable to be subtle with his characters - if a character likes to paint - they are suddenly THE ONE AND ONLY AMAZINGLY TALENTED undiscovered artist EVER. If a character had a tough upbringing - not only was it THE WORST CHILDHOOD ever but they also find a reason to bring it up in virtually every situation to the point of teeth wrenching annoyance. He is also guilty of the American authors habit of being European pretentiouness - especially with Italian food - which is always found in THE BEST UNDISCOVERED BUT SMALL AND COSY AND WARM AND PERFECTLY AUTHENTIC ITALIAN RESTAURANT ever, which is obviously run by a friend of one of the main characters (who is always very generous with his/her PARM-E-ZHAAAN 'shavings'). Take it as a given that the wine compliments the food perfectly (and is never drunk, always... savoured) and the meal will always be gratis (but the AMAZING ARTIST CHARACTER will promise an INCREDIBLY WELL EXECUTED oil colour as a gift to say 'Tar'). In the same way John Grisham is guilty of shoe-horning Italy in to everything he can as well - just so he can rattle on about RICH DARK THICK SWEET COFFEE, PERFECTLY AL-DENTE PASSST-TAH and of course PARM-E-ZHAAAN SHAVINGS not grated, but SHAVINGS (of a brick sized block of cheese by the way, of course).

But...

If you get past that it's a very good and gripping listen equal parts horror, disgust and psycho nasty business. I nearly stopped listening at the first bedroom/sex scene. I am glad I did not.

Superb listening.

Great book, superb listening value. I loved it. Having read several of Dean Koontz books now, he has become, to me, the new James Herbert' whom I avidly followed and read all his breathtaking books. He death, sadly, has been a great loss not only to his family and friends but also to the literary world. Finally I've found another author whose writing grips me from the beginning to the very end as James Herbert's did. Thank you all involved in the making of this Audio book with special thanks to the Author and narrator. BRILLIANT!!! 😊

Koontz delivers the goods again.

Good book, some interesting twists in the story but that is a trademark of the author. The suspense, horror and mystery that Koontz fans expect is all here. So far as I?m aware this is the only Dean Koontz novel released as a movie, I can?t say the adaptation was good at all and really didn?t like the film, but the book is great!

Classic Koontz

Really enjoyed this book! Great characters and excellent narration. I would admit I kind of guessed what was going on quite early but its still a great listen.

That performer. Wow

I loved this story, but the performance by William Dufris is the best performance I have ever heard on an audible book. He brought the characters to life and I forgot I was listening to one man read the book. Absolutely fantastic.

A bit drawn out but glad I stuck at it

Because it’s quite dated I won’t lay too heavy on the fact it was quite misogynistic and the detailing of the women was not needed to give that picture in your mind of what was happening. Over all a good story but He’s done much better.

So Disappointing : (

Would you try another book written by Dean Koontz or narrated by William Dufris?

As a fan of Dean Koontz I was so very disappointed with this book. I would always try further books by Dean Koontz as I am usually a big fan but what happened? It turned into a sloppy romance… there were parts I wanted to speed through, there was no, I don't know, no uuuumph! It felt like a third rate romance novel…. uuuugggg. If I had wanted chick lit I would have looked at that genre. It just got soppy and full of cliches… just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Has Whispers put you off other books in this genre?

No…. I just wouldn't have place it in this genre.

Did William Dufris do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

I think he did the best he could do with the script. His voice as the female lead was just… well… annoying. It just didn't work and I felt like it had a child like quality to it… it just wasn't happening.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Seriously disappointed. I always so look forward to any Dean Koontz books but this just really let me down and I feel I can't wait to finish it so I can get onto something I enjoy. Strangely it made me feel sarcastic towards the characters as they were so dumbed down and obvious.

Any additional comments?

So disappointed I cannot recommend this book. From the plot to the characters to the reading to the soppy cliches… it really… and my apologies but I cannot think of any other word that truly works but it really sucked.
