The veil I've worn from birth carries with it a terrible loneliness, a suppression I cannot imagine ever being free of. My mother will always hate me. Her court will always shun me. When the peace delegation arrives from the savage world of Glacium, my life is shoved wildly out of control by the handsome Prince Kedrick, who, for unfathomable reasons, shows me kindness. Summary
A father. A mentor. A leader. Still, a soldier.
Tyrus expected his world to change once the Geneshan War ended. He expected it to change more once he finally reunited with his family.
He did not foresee that the biggest upheaval to his world would be caused by Turine sorcerers tampering with an ancient Geneshan artifact in the capital city of Hol.
The land stands devastated and covered in a haze. Sorcerers are unable to use their power. The king and capital are likely destroyed. Raiders seek to profit in a world without law.
Tyrus decides that he must get his loved ones to the safety of the Southern Kingdoms if they are to have any chance of surviving. The quick flight he plans turns into a labored journey when local townsfolk join his party. Expecting only new dangers now before him, Tyrus fails to anticipate old ones haunting his steps.

Spectacular writing and narration.
I am very confused that I had not come across this author nor that his books had not shown up in my recommended lists. Frankly this is some of the best fantasy I have come across in my time with audible and I have hundreds and hundreds of books in my library.
First some people have an issue with Steven Brand as a narrator. He is dispassionate and can be accused of being deadpan. I have the opposite view and was really disappointed when he was removed as the narrator from the second Anthony Ryan series. I believe Steven Brand like Steven Pacey improves books. His no nonsense approach with great accents and character differentiation is marvellous. I actually found this series by looking at books narrated by Steven Brand.
The books fit nicely into the new Grimdark genre. Some real tear jerker moments and plenty of bad characters and strong decisions by the protagonist.
Magic is a light touch and not a main feature of the books which I prefer, similar I suppose in a way to Joe Abercrombie though Joe injects a lot of humour into his books which is absent here.
I normally like longer books for the perceived value for money but I am buying all of these without hesitation and getting through one a day. In most books I find certain elements that I do not like and have to get past. This series is one of few in which I would change nothing.
Not finished the series yet but at the moment I am putting Joshua P Simon in my top 5 authors.Sterling work and addictive as anything.

Slow
this one slid a bit. the first one was engrossing. the narration and characters were good. however the plot was a bit weak. inexplicably extreme anti-veteran violence immediately upon returning home was odd but I went with it. unfortunately the plot drags and does not progress much with this installment. first book was 4 stars I spite of the flaws. the second 3. I will give it one more

Good story, but falls a little short but not bad
This is the second book in the series, and has just enough action to keep it interesting, so I'll be grabbing the 3rd. Characters, some you love, some you despise, which tells that they are well written. One complaint, and I've seen it in most of reviews and now realize they weren't exaggerating....is how he goes on and on and on and on....get the picture...of his late wife. Very tedious and gets old very fast. Some parts of the book you may question why it's even there, but I feel it's because you're getting a sense of how Tyrus thinks. All in all good book...just skip the pages of him going on about his ex wife, and you'll probably like it.

More stupidity
Wasted my credit on this series but it thought me a lesson don't buy an entire series because you will be disappointed. I can't believe this MC is so stupid isn't unreal. This guy is supposed to be a great strategist and planner, but couldn't negotiate a simple plan for his entire family and group to stay as one unit or to be more than a sergeant. He would rather send his family into the unknown by themselves rather than keep them with him where he would keep them safe and keep training them. It destroys the story and makes it hard listen to such a great reading done by Steven Brand.
