Exciting, engaging, well written!
I really, really enjoyed this. I never give out spoilers as it ruins the book for you so I’m not going to do that but I sort of want to because I really got into this!
Our main character is well developed with a great personality that never grates which was one of the things that helped to draw me into this book so quickly. Naturally protective of others but not in an unrealistic way. In fact I thought all the characters were well developed and realistic. Basically this books grabs you from the start. I love the premise of technology coming back to bite us but we are still the self-centered people that we are at the moment so how will we work together for a better world or in fact just survive? We get a good bit of backstory in terms of explaining the downfall of humanity to the bots that gets us to the place where the story is focused. The author really crafts us a great premise/world/story.
There are some really cool plot twists that I liked. Plenty of surprises and action throughout the book keep you wanting more. We are set up for the next book although I was happy with the ending. I’m glad the next book is already out however as otherwise I’d be biting at the bit to get the author to release it as I enjoyed the book enough that I want more asap!
This is my first experience of the works of A.J. Eversley. But it certainly will not be my last as the writing is very good.
I should probably mention the narration which is also very, very good. I thought it matched the character and the world excellently. It adds to the sense of tension and pace that is enjoyable from start to finish.

I really enjoyed listening to The Watcher (particularly as I love any book with any female lead character who refuses to kowtow).
The narrator was superb too - her voice perfect for Sawyers character.

Can the Watchers win through?
Can the Watchers win through?
Even though Dystopian Fantasy is not usually my genre of choice, they can make a good change if well done, and not too far for my belief to stretch. This one was definitely an enjoyable listen and such a relief after a bunch of poor books lately. The narration was excellent, some of the best narrators I've come across recently, and this helped to push a 4* up to a 5*.
The adventure takes place after World War 3 and only two known cities remain. Humans are struggling to survive against Bots (large robots) and Carbons (copies of humans but with super-powers, including rapid recovery from injury).
The main character is Sawyer, who lost her parents at the age of eight and has been training to become a Watcher for the ten years since then. She is extremely fit, super strong and a sharp shot. She is ready to give her life to save humanity.
The other main character, who we meet a little way into the book, is Kenzie. His narrative is in third person, which was a bit strange in the audio version because he is read by a separate male narrator, yet not in first person.
For the first half of this book I was totally blown away. I'm less of a fan of the adventure bits, shooting and running and narrowly escaping, so I lost interest slightly in the second half, but that's just me.
The dog was an interesting feature, I realise I don't come across so many pets in novels.
All in all this was a great read and I hope I will get the change to listen to the next few books in the series.
(Just a note: I would have preferred not to have a good half hour of the next book at the end of this audio. I would have skipped this if I'd been reading, but it's hard to be sure what it is on audio. I heard the word Prologue, but part of me assumed I was still in Watcher. I never see the point of the beginning of a book you can't continue...)

I didn't want to stop reading to this!A really good first book in a series with a peak at the next book.I can't wait to hear more of Sawyer and Chevys story. Chelsea Stephens and Steve Campbell were terrific narrators. I was given this book by the narrator,author or publisher free for an honest review.

A good fun dystopian story

The Book
This dives straight into some good action with some nice descriptions and introduces us to the main character. It takes a little bit to get used to the world and whats going on but once you do its a good story and the characters are written well. There's obvious parallels to some other sci-fi properties such as Terminator but these are purely on the surface and the world we see here and its dystopian setting is good enough to stand on its own. As with many YA series this features romance as well as action but this isn't done in an annoying simpering way its just a part of the story which is good as sometimes romance in YA books can bog down and detract from the rest of the story. The ending sets up nicely for more and I hope they will continue the story in much the same quality as this is, I didn't listen to the preview at the end as that's often more annoying if you cant read the full story!
The Production
The female narrator has a nice tone and reads well, there's a slight hiss sometimes on the end of her sentences ending in an 'S' which is a little annoying but livable. The male narrator doesn't read quite as well, his tone is more flat but the quality is better. Overall though its a good performance between them both and works well when switching viewpoints.

Really good
I do love a dystopian twisted audiobook. I listen to a mix genre but this is a favourite choice to listen to.
They’re different & always packed with things going on.
This didn’t disappoint.
The worlds a mess, The Watchers have a job, they’ve had to choose sides. Families have been lost and rebuilt from within the groups.
But is it as it seems? Are people as they seem?
Narrators were really good at keeping the tempo going & keeping me hooked.
Really good listen & read.

I stayed up all night until I had finished...
listening I just couldn’t leave it. I don’t usually like Dystopian books but I may have changed my mind as this book was brilliant.
Chelsea Stephens narration is just perfect i think she’s one of the best new narrators out there also the switch between POV between Chelsea and Steve Campbell was a really good pairing and I will be saving credits to buy the further books in this series

not just another YA novel...
was recommended this based on the narration pairing and I must admit they do a remarkable job telling the story, with the view shifting between chapters.
honestly I think they are my new favourite pairing for novels with shifting views, a feature I hated till I heard these 2 doing it.
what impresses me the most was that the characters sound pretty identical regardless of who is narrating...
the story is pretty interesting aside from a few "oh btw, we have to include some teenage romance moments because we have to"

Unappealing to a seasoned post apocalyptic fan
This is very much a "young adult" novel
(emphasis on the young). The main character, Sawyer, is an 18 year old girl who, despite surviving for 10 years in a dystopic post-apocalyptic world, seems exceptionally immature and clueless. Throw into this a romantic sub-plot and it destroys utterly any atmosphere that Eversley was building with her world-building. The serendipitous plot twists are flagged well in advance to any seasoned reader but may amuse the more inexperienced listener. I personally didn't connect with any of the characters and did not feel a jot of empathy for their plight. All this negativity aside, Eversley certainly can write and delivers the action effortlessly without superfluous language bogging down the narrative.
Chelsea Stevens and Steve Campbell's narration compliment each other very well. Few audiobooks succeed when characters read by one narrator interact with characters read by another but these two seem to gel well together. The audio quality is crisp, clear and no noticeable dips in editing.
Overall this is a reasonable YA novel but certainly doesn't quite cut the mustard for a grumpy middle aged man like myself.
