Summary
The No.1 Sunday Times bestseller
IN THE FINAL RECKONING, CHOOSE YOUR SIDE CAREFULLY…
The epic conclusion to the globally bestselling historical series.
After years fighting to reclaim his rightful home, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has returned to Northumbria. With his loyal band of warriors and a new woman by his side, his household is secure – yet Uhtred is far from safe. Beyond the walls of his impregnable fortress, a battle for power rages.
To the south, King Æthelstan has unified the three kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia – and now eyes a bigger prize. To the north, King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their borders and expand their dominion.
Caught in the eye of the storm is Uhtred. Threatened and bribed by all sides, he faces an impossible choice: stay out of the struggle, risking his freedom, or throw himself into the cauldron of war and the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced. Only fate can decide the outcome.
The epic story of how England was made concludes in WAR LORD, the magnificent finale to the Last Kingdom series.

Fantastic story interweaved with history.
Love Bernard Cornwell's books. They bring history to life. This the 13th and last in the Saxon series is up to his usual standard. I will never fight in a shield wall but the description he writes brings it to light. I have been to many of the places in this series and whether you are standing on Bamburgh castle, Durham or walking up to the white horse I always view it in the eyes of Uthred!
Can't believe that's 13 books and 16 years. I feel Uthreds aches and pains now.
Thank you Bernard Cornwell

Marvellous end to a brilliant series.
The last book in the "Last Kingdom " series lives up to expectations. A fitting end to a wonderful historical saga following Uhtred throughout his life. I have never read a Bernard Cornwell book that I have not enjoyed and this is my favourite series. I will very much miss the anticipation of reading about Uhtred's next adventure . - perhaps I will have to re-read the whole series sooner rather than later! Quite apart from anything else, reading these books will teach you a great deal about this period of history, while immersing you in an enthralling tale populated with a host of fascinating characters, many of whom are real historical figures who come back to life in the pages of Bernard Cornwell's novels.
Clearly you will miss a lot if you do not read the books in order. "War Lord" brings Uhtred's tale to an end in a satisfying and fulfilling way, with plenty of visceral action along the way! Don't miss it!

Warlord
This book is about 50 hours too short...
A fitting, dignified, ever exciting and very acceptable conclusion to the life story that has been such an absorbing and enjoyable companion.
Brilliant.
... soooo. I wonder what adventures his son will get up to Bernard?
Thank you.

Great read, and a good audio reading.
I had an advance order for the print book when published and read it in two days. Fascinating.
I have all the books in the series.
Lately I've had eye problems and before and after some recent surgery I used the audio version to keep me amused and occupied as I could not see well enough to re-read the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version, and like the print version I "could not put it down".
Bernard Cornwell has a knack of blending historic events with fictional characters, to produce very engaging stories.
Wirral Archaeology - of which I am a member - welcomed BC to a day long series of events and a display of archaeological finds during 2019. BC's account of the battle is based on one of our theories on the possible battle site.
Finding conclusive proof of a battle that occurred over a thousand years ago is a huge and expensive task.
The search area is - very large.
We are only a small voluntary group, but punch way above our weight with help from many expert supporters.
A lot more investigative work is still needed to confirm - whether or not - the battle site has been found.
But things look... interesting 😉
Is Wirral "the birthplace of England"?
That has yet to be confirmed.
Congratulations to BC for another enthralling read. I hope he will be able to visit Wirral again.
What a story...
What a battle...!!!
What a tale is yet to be told...!

Phenomenal series of books.
Possibly the greatest series of books, detailing the history of England obviously using a fictional character. This series develops not only the story but characters which the reader.grows to.identify and love. Uhtred's story is a story that I return to time and again, if you are looking for excellent battle scenes, strong characters and great storyline then this series is all you need. I like most other readers will miss the gnarley old Uhtred , until that is we pick up the first volume and there he is once again as large as life....enjoy...many of us have.

Fabulous book - fabulous series.
I have loved these books - and am sorry they’ve come to an end. I think what I have loved the most, is the fact that, although it is fictional, it is based on a knowledge of the times and has been researched so well. Thank you so much Mr. Cornwell, for bringing times past to life.
