Well crafted Viking Saga

If you like your battles bloody, your characters cruel and a plot which twists and turns like the coils of Nidhogg who chews on Yiggdrasil’s roots then this is for you!
Peter Gibbons’s saga transports the reader to march alongside Ivar the Boneless and the Great Heathen Army. Occasionally he repeats back story but it is not too frequent to irritate. Nichols Jordan’s narration is nothing short of excellent. His rendition of the different characters voices superb. Off to download the next in the series!

hooked

got hooked very fast. The story was great even though it was a bit cliche. Characters were likable although sometimes it was hard to remember some characters who melded together, some side antagonists for example. Hundr was a bit of a Gary Sue given how easily he beat everyone but this WAS balanced by his personality. He was skilled but inexperienced with the viking world. He was also brash and a bit foolish.
Narrator seemed monotonous at first but I warmed up to him after a while.

A great introduction

I really enjoyed this first installment from Peter Gibbons. I did find the narrator let the story down and would of liked a bit more emotion in the narration from Nicholas Jordan. Certain points in the story are highly thrilling and suspenseful and the narration sounds like a weather report.

Other than that, it was an enjoyable listen.

Gave it chance and I’m so glad I did

So many stories that just fail to deliver. Great series that then get made in to tv series and the author starts wringing for TV rather than in the vein the he started out in …..

I’ve been hunting for something to listen whilst driving that didn’t make me want to pull in the services and return the dull and boring story line. Took me a while but I found it!!!!!!!!!!

Action from the off and great characters !! Get cracking on the rest of series please

Enjoyable story, fantastic narration.

The story was good, interesting characters. There were lots of characters with similar names that would have been difficult to follow but the narration was really good, it helped me keep track of each character.

Good book, horrible narrator

A fun read, but the narration absolutely kills any enjoyment you may receive. There is no inflection in his voice, no emotion, nothing. It’s like he’s trying to get through the story as fast as he can- almost like a kid giving a book report. It’s really a shame, because it could have been so much better.

A Good Story Hobbled by Bad Narration

As several other reviewers have commented, the performance is delivered in an overly fast monotone, bereft of expression and emotion that would make the story more enjoyable. The story was pretty good, although the romantic subplot, which was an important driving device for the main plot, felt underdeveloped and trite. I almost did not finish listening, had the book been longer I probably would not have.

Difficult to listen to

Loved the story. The monotone reading by Jordan ruined it for me. Not sure I will purchase additional volumes

Amazing Story, Not so Amazing Narration

oh man, this book is incredibly hard to rate by giving stars.... I settled on 3 star because the author spun a masterful Viking story. It was true to the time period, and alot of research must have gone into this.

The juxtaposition of Viking ruthless brutality and fierce love. Great character building.
Twists and turns I didn't see coming, but are culturally accurate for the time period. intriguing! lots of action scenes.

Sooooo, the Narration was rough. The first chapter was insanely hard to listen to because the narrator comes off as monotonous. However, I sped up the narration speed (1.10 is what I thought sounded best) and his voice becomes much less monotonous. I believe the editor/mixer slowed it down way to much when editing. probably because he has an accent, but in this case it's just horrible Sound Editing. There are also 4-6 second pauses between each chapter which is incredibly ANNOYING. And even some static/White noise in one place.
Get through the first chapter, mess with narration speed and ignore sound editing flaws....then not so bad. The narrator has a subtle inflection between dialects for the characters and a genuine (sounding) Danish accent overall.
If you can, skip the Audible and just read the book!!!

My favorite book of 2022 so far

This one is fantastic. The pacing, the style, the narrator. I would stay in the car in my driveway because I wasn’t ready to stop just yet. About to start book two now!

Not a bad story, but really sub par narration.

The story was not bad, and was relatively entertaining but the reader was almost like a computer. Kind of a shame as it could be so much better!

More please!

Great start to a saga! Interesting characters not only skilled in battle but loaded with baggage that can help weave depth, conflict, pain and triumph to any Viking raid. Narrator was flat and monotone at times but had good character voices and heaviness when needed but lacked lightness and range.
