Summary

Sunday Times top 10 best seller by the author of Walking the Himalayas, winner of the 2016 Edward Stanford Adventure Travel Book of the Year award.

Walking the Americas chronicles Levison Wood's 1,800 mile trek along the spine of the Americas, through eight countries, from Mexico to Colombia, experiencing some of the world's most diverse, beautiful and unpredictable places.

His journey took him from violent and dangerous cities to ancient Mayan ruins lying still unexplored in the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala. He encountered members of indigenous tribes, migrants heading towards the US border and proud Nicaraguan revolutionaries on his travels, where at the end of it all, he attempted to cross one of the most impenetrable borders on earth: the Darien Gap route from Panama into South America. This trek required every ounce of Levison Wood's guile, tact, strength and resilience in one of the rawest, most real and most exciting journeys of his life.

Great story, wrong narrator

A story that is great to hear about and so awe inspiring.

The down point of this book is the narrator. You want it to be Levison telling the story but this narrators voice does grind in certain points and lets the story down.

However overall the story is exciting and a good one if you can get past the voice.

A visit to places I shall never go.

Although I have been blessed with the opportunities to live in other countries, visit many parts of Europe, observe wild animals in British Columbia and stay as a teenager in French, German and Danish homes.Travel the West Coast of the United States and travel Coast to Coast across Canada. None of these experiences have conveyed me so vibrantly to the countries and peoples introduced through this book. Indeed I knew very little about ‘The America’s’ and am so glad I purchased this book. Journeys I shall never travel but have experienced through Levison’s and Barnaby Edwards’ narration of this vibrant account. It made me feel I was there. Wonderful.

👍

Enjoyed listening to it, though it wasn't as good as the other of Levison's books. There were times when narrators voice was quite annoying.

Does not disappoint

If you've enjoyed Levison's Nile and Himalayan escapades, this latest travelogue will not disappoint. It is well written and carries with it a prose from someone who is not just passing through the land, but taking it in too.

Many will come to this audiobook after seeing the series on television and as with Lev's other two exploits, the audiobook of his travels in Central America will leave you with far more detail and insight into his journey, than was ever seen on screen.

Lev's ability through preparation and bloody-mindedness, often shows us that even in this world of internet, satellites and cheap, global travel, a long slog through the wilderness is not that much different to that experienced by the explorers of old.

In short, it just goes to show that it is still possible to launch an expedition through untamed places and when one does come across large, modern settlements, one can still experience a culture shock... in reverse.

Enjoyable adventure story

A really enjoyable and insightful adventure tale as Wood and his companion Roberto hike across central america. They come up against hostile terrain and a variety of environments both urban and wild. Additionally we see first hand the impact of the migrant crisis in the Americas. Some really good observations are made across the journey about the cultures, peoples and the history of the region and the impact Europeans have had on the area.

Very good and clear narration.

Really enjoyable, it was like being on the journey yourself less the insects, and spiders, the smells etc…

A truly excellent adventure travel book, the chapter about diving the ancient sink hole alone is worth the price of the whole book, just like the authors other writings, you will not be able to put this read down once you have started, highly recommended to real fans of travel.

Travel Writing at it’s Best

My second Levison Wood read/listen. It didn’t disappoint! A great blend of humour, surprise, knowledgeable history and a fascinating insight into an interesting chain of countries.

Decent story awful narration

Good tale of an epic walk by Wood. Interesting places and people. However the narrator is pretty awful. It sounds like stereotype Major General or David Niven even... Fine when he’s taking off Old British military but somewhat belittling of tribal elders.
