Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Take a deep breath.

Steve Backshall was nine years old the first time he saw a shark, while on holiday with his family in Malaysia. It was the beginning of a life-long fascination with these 'lords of the sea', and the oceanic life around them. His career as one of the world's most popular naturalists and explorers has taken him to countless underwater places, many never before seen by others. And he's also been witness to the startling decline in fortune of our oceans' wild inhabitants over the past fifty years.

Deep Blue is a book a lifetime in the making: a remarkable blend of memoir, travel, and marine and environmental science that takes us on an unforgettable tour of the many worlds of aquatic life: from underwater deserts and rainforests to the evolution of ocean heroes like the sea turtle and the Great White, from the genesis of ocean life to the rapidly declining state of white polar seas and coral reefs. It's both a love letter to our precious oceans and rallying cry for what we must to do save them.

Lifesaving book about saving life

Really interesting and well read audiobook. I very much enjoyed it and it truly was a delight in the wee small hours with my newborn! Steve has a very calm voice (when not hugely excited about fauna and flora in front of him!) and that helped a lot with making my evenings relaxed and pleasant. Some of the chapters were saddening, how can you not get upset about whaling really? But I think that it presented a balanced and informative approach to those issues. A really great book, and when I finally get some time I might even get the paper copy!

Amazing and sad

Brilliant book, great lecture of biology, adventure and experiences. An amazing underwater world out there - but one under constant threat. Protect our seas!

Engaging and informative

I really enjoyed the structure, how information was presented alongside live experiences to highlight Steve’s overall point. It’s a hard point to make without being scary or making it too tough to listen to casually but it was very well done

Truly brilliant!

Compelling and informative, Steve is the Cousteau of our time and heir apparent to Sir David Attenborough; as passionate and dedicated as both with a gift to portray and share in his writing the wonders of our planet. I've been a fan for many years and didn't think 'Expedition' could be bettered, but Deep Blue does just that. Thank you Steve, a truly brilliant book.

informative, exciting, frightening and hopeful

Well done Steve, great book. Loved the mix of science, history, frightening information and hope. You interwove your vast experience well with the facts we wanted to know. Great book. I hope it inspires others as much as it did me.
