Summary

In his darkest depression, one idea brought Christian Lewis out of the depths - and into a new life. Finding Hildasay, read by the author, is a brutal and beautiful true story of depression, survival, walking, and the meaning of home.

‘Now I was finally out of the force of the wind, my body began to warm – the part where the real pain sets in. I’d felt it plenty of times before on this journey, but this time it was different. As I began to regain feeling in my fingers and toes, it burned so strongly that I just sat in tears of pain.’

Ex-paratrooper Christian Lewis had hit rock bottom, suffering with depression so severe he would shut himself in his bedroom for weeks. Then while surfing – his only respite – he cast his eyes along the coastline and realized it was the only place he really wanted to be.

Making an impulsive decision to set himself a challenge – walk the entire coastline of the UK – Chris gave himself a few days to rustle up a tent and walking boots, then left for good with just a tenner in his pocket and two days’ worth of food. Little did he know at the time just how long it would take to cross the finish line – and the encounters that lay ahead that would turn his life around.

Five years later, Chris has navigated the West Coast, Northern Ireland, the hard-rock cliffs of Scotland and the perimeters of the Scottish Islands . He spent three months on an uninhabited island called Hildasay, where there was no fresh water or food. It was there, the most barren his route had become, that the more pride and respect he found within himself – and the more remarkable his journey became. Happiness and hope was just around the corner.

My first 'binge listen'...

I love audiobooks but each time one ends, I worry that the next will not be as good. I get one audible credit per month so I get one chance to get it right or have to wait another 4 weeks for my next joyful noise ;) ..but when I heard a sample of this story, I downloaded it in seconds.

Of course, now I think it's finally happened. How can this be beaten? it's just an amazing story, well written and read perfectly by the author (I think this gives it even more sense of realism)..

I cannot explain the enjoyment I've had following this journey. Well done to him and his dog 👍

Took me back to the Highlands

Enjoyed this unpretentious book very much. The descriptions of the Highlands and Islands were fantastic and took me back to where I once lived. Well read by the author who completed an amazing walk with his beautiful and loyal dog to raise funds for charity.

Tissues at the ready!

Having followed Chris and Jet throughout their journey I should have guessed this would have me in tears regularly. Warning - do. Not listen in public unless we’ll prepared with tissues! Fabulous to have Chris reading his & Jets own tale (or should that be tail!)

Incredible achievement! What a great read!

Loved that the book is actually narrated by the author himself, felt so much more personal. An incredible story of inspiration and of the deep impact that crippling debt and unacknowledged mental health has on a huge percentage of our population.

I am hopeful of book number two as I just NEED to know more about this now wife and their gorgeous little boy.

A story of love and determination

I loved the easy manner that Chris reads with, it's like listening to a friend. This is
a fabulous story which I've followed online for a long time. Chris makes no secret of the fact that he's battled some demons and he bravely tells us his true story of how he decided to walk the UK coastline to raise money for a very worthy cause. And how he met his most trusted companion, Jet along the way.
This is a wonderful tale which isn't over yet, this is just the beginning...

Touching and entertaining

A personal and entertaining account of the ultimate UK long distance hike. I devoured it in two days. Richer description of natural landscape would have made it even better.
