About this listen
Silence can be deafening.
Jean McClellan spends her time in almost complete silence, limited to just 100 words a day. Any more, and a thousand volts of electricity will course through her veins.
Now the new government is in power, everything has changed. But only if you’re a woman.
Almost overnight, bank accounts are frozen, passports are taken away and 70 million women lose their jobs. Even more terrifyingly, young girls are no longer taught to read or write.
For herself, for her daughter and for every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice. This is only the beginning....
Perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale. Don’t miss the thrilling debut that everyone is talking about!

Great concept, poor execution.
There could have been so much more to this, such a shame the good bit got rushed. She spent 50 odd chapters setting the scene then half that actually dealing with it. Got a bit boring and repetitive!

A scary look into our possible future!!
Meanwhile, over in a Dystopian America....Women have been silenced!
They are no longer allowed to read, write, use phones, hold a job, and most scary of all, they are only allowed to speak a maximum 100 words a day!
To make sure that this is completely set in place, all women have been fitted with a beautiful bracelet, a little bit like a digital watch, it has a counter on it, but instead of telling the time, it slowly counts down from 100 every time you utter a word. When it gets down to zero you will receive an electric shock.
But don't feel it's just us poor old women that get the sh*tty end of the stick, no, the bracelet and the rules will also apply to young female children including babies!
A once brilliant minded Dr. Jean McClellan, a leading doctor in her field of Cognitive linguistics is now just a mother of 4, she is in the house just to cook, clean and wash like the dutiful housewife that she is!
She is however given a slight reprieve when her expertise is needed...to help a man!
With Flashbacks that show how women have been beaten down to nothing, while men are still allowed to do whatever they want, this Dystopian book will give you Handmaids Tale vibes, if you like that one, then you will probably love this book too

Still not a fan of Bouchard's narration style...
Dalcher's story was good though. As a take on the Handmaids Take goes. It was chilling.

A really good listen
I absolutely loved this story. Good reader. The concept is great and I had to listen as much as I could at the expense of watching TV.

How precious life is and how quickly things can slip into chaos.
This book grafted my attention especially as a mother of two girls, how incredible our lives are now compared to what could happen (at the hands of men)
We have done so much damage in the history of being human where powerful men think they know best and luckily history is shown us how wrong they were but this book Shows how simple it would be to shut women up for good. It’s written beautifully it’s easy enough to read while travelling to and from places and it’s heartbreaking at the thought that something like this could happen. If you love the handmaid‘s tale, this is along the similar lines, but not as horrific. Had tears in my eyes at the end… I now need to go and phone everyone I know and just talk and sing and laugh.
