Summary

Meet the forensic pathologist, Dr Richard Shepherd, in the true crime book of the year - brought to you by Penguin.

'The dead do not hide the truth and they never lie. Through me the dead can speak....'

He solves the mysteries of unexplained or sudden death.

He has performed over 23,000 autopsies, including investigating some of the most high-profile cases of recent times; the Hungerford Massacre, the Princess Diana inquiry, and 9/11.

He has faced serial killers, natural disasters, 'perfect murders' and freak accidents.

His evidence has put killers behind bars, freed the innocent and turned open-and-shut cases on their heads.

Yet all this has come at a huge personal cost.

Written and narrated by Dr Richard Shepherd, Unnatural Causes tells the story of not only the cases and bodies that have haunted him the most, but also how to live a life steeped in death.

Too much about him, too little about forensics

Returned this book as I couldn't take any more about his marriage, childhood, flying lessons, marriage, kids, marriage... Not enough forensic science. The bits where it finally gets going are interesting, but they would probably make a book about 90 minutes long.

Simply brilliant

This is a fantastic book. It is extremely well written and well read by Dr Richard Shepherd, who in my opinion deserves an OBE. You feel you just want to say a massive thank you and give him a really big hug. A man anyone would be proud to meet and be acquainted with.

Fascinating read, sad when it finished

I sometimes think about who I would love as a guest at a dinner arty, that someone who could tell you stories for hours - well Dr Shepherd is that very guest. I have watched him several times on tv and always said I would love to hear more from him - forensic pathology fascinates me.

I was so pleased to hear he had written a biography and couldn’t wait to buy it on Audible. Gripped from start to finish, his book gives a wonderful insight into his life & career as a forensic pathologist who has worked on some very high profile cases. I always find audiobooks better when narrated by the author, which is the case here - it gives more emotion into what you are listening to.

My only criticism is the book came to an end - a I feel lost now it’s finished!

Brilliant...

I'll never look at a Sunday roast in the same manner again.. :)

A difficult subject brought to life... (no pun intended), well written, narrated and emotive. Highly recommended.

Amazing, even made me consider a career change!

I’ve always been interested in forensics and murder, and have always wanted a job photographing crime scenes and bodies but after listening to Richard my interest has switched to forensic pathology and I start my open university course in the autumn!
