Summary
In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security and social fabric.
Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in New York, where Donald and his four siblings grew up. She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse.
She explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who currently occupies the Oval Office, including the strange and harmful relationship between Fred Trump and his two oldest sons, Fred Jr. and Donald.
A first-hand witness, Mary brings an incisive wit and unexpected humour to sometimes grim, often confounding family events. She recounts in unsparing detail everything from her uncle Donald’s place in the family spotlight and Ivana’s penchant for regifting to her grandmother’s frequent injuries and illnesses and the appalling way Donald, Fred Trump’s favourite son, dismissed and derided him when he began to succumb to Alzheimer’s.
Numerous pundits, armchair psychologists and journalists have sought to explain Donald Trump’s lethal flaws. Mary Trump has the education, insight and intimate familiarity needed to reveal what makes Donald and the rest of her clan tick. She alone can recount this fascinating, unnerving saga, not just because of her insider’s perspective, but also because she is the only Trump willing to tell the truth about one of the world’s most powerful and dysfunctional families.

Too much and never detached
I listened to this in 24 hours. It is a bit like Dallas the 1970s oil tycoon soap with JR.
The author, and reader, Mary Trump, POTUS’s niece certainly has an axe to grind or at least wield. Clearly there is no love lost between her and DT and she seems to put a lot of emphasis on the cause of her father’s untimely death due to alcohol related illnesses on her father’s pathological relationship with his own father, Fred, and younger brother DT.
The author is a clinical psychologist and although she comments on the difficulty of examining family dynamics if you are a part of the family it doesn’t stop her indulging in a lot of analysis and psychological understandings of what is going on. I am a retired consultant psychiatrist and was able to understand her points but clearly she was far too emotionally involved for her observations to be very helpful.
It is a bit of an unrelenting attack on DT and since I am no fan of his I enjoyed it. Clearly more heat than light.
But an addictive and entertaining listen.

Excellent narration and information. Not usual trump book!
I don’t write reviews and had to for this.
Live in Ireland and read a lot of trump books (pauses Bolton’s to listen to this). This isn’t politics it’s just insight into the man. It lets you know the why to what you know he is doing. It explains huge amounts.
Well read and great pace.
Couldn’t recommend enough.

too much is too much
I don't care for Donald Trump , With that said this book is really about Mary how she would take all insults and degredation to eat at the same trough as the rest of this appalling family .
It is mostly about Mary feeling hard done by because her father squandered the fortune he was given . and her being left out of a Will.
very little about DT we did not already know .
waste of a credit .

A view of a dysfunctional family, dominated by a control freak.
Basically the story of Fred Trump Sr. And the dysfunctional and controlling way he dominated his family.
This is the same story as any of another Sociopathic men who due to childhood trauma, become merciless predators on their families and society.
The result is the same. Theft, greed cruelty are engaged in and spread like disease, creating a family wide nightmare.
While the book is a focus on Donald Trump, it is actually a blueprint for Dysfunctional parents and families, raising and creating dysfunctional children.

Worth a listen for greater insight into the monster!
Delighted that Audible released this recording on the same release date as the book.
Great that narration is by the author.
Don’t be disappointed in the information, this is a reflection of her father’s life and death as she experienced it as a child and young woman and how the Trump family dynamic and dysfunction impacted on all family members.
Couldn’t stop listening, well written and narrated. USA needs to elect a new president in November 2020!

Well worth a listen
For anyone interested in the psyche of the current US President. The author being both his niece and a clinical psychologist gives a fascinating insight into why Trump is the way he is, where the hyperbole, arrogance and dishonesty comes from. The sort of book you can listen to in one day, if you’re not busy.

Disappointed
I bought this book as the author is a clinical psychologist and I thought we would get an experts insight into the disturbing behaviours Trump displays. However, the majority of the book focussed on the history of the family. I know this has shaped the person we see today but for me the balance was the wrong way round. Wish “The dangerous case of Donald Trump” authors would publish an updated version. I’d love to hear what they have to say 3 1/2 years into his surreal presidency.

Fantastic read and terrifying.
This is a very eye opening story. There are people who should have to be tested and licensed to have children. Fred Trump shoukd never have been allowed to parent anyone.

A complete guide to understanding Donald Trump
What I liked about this book: The book was although 6hrs to describe Donald’s upbringing and the reason for who he is today but even as short as it was,the author still made it work I can say for myself now I understand and if she hadn’t written it a lot of people would still be in the dark till today.
To whom I would recommend this book: Hmm how about the millions of people who still want to vote for him a second time and every other person who still follows his covid Doctor tips.
Ratings: Really is that a question? The book was outstanding,I live in Nigeria a country who is blindly following every whim of the president of the United States and its really affecting me and my fellow citizens. So even here in Africa we feel the brunt of trumps ignorance. So five stars to that book for telling us the truth about him I know this book will have a lot of haters but its the truth not from an outsider but from family imagine that.Excellent.

Listen with an open mind
Such a tragic story of a family that had so much promise but was so full of dysfunctional relationships.
America needs leadership which is above everything else committed to the service of its people.. this provides unique insight in a man who seems to motivated by a deep sense of personality conflict..

Total miss and great disappointment
I had great expectations to this book and found it a total disappointment. The book is more about how badly she (and her “poor dad”) has been treated rather than an attempt at giving any new insights to Donald’s behavior and mental state. Don’t waste your time, save your money and buy another book

What a messed up family. The lot of them.
I found this book very insightful. So many things don’t make sense when watching Donald Trump play president. Mary Trump’s explanations helped to start to understand that life like him exists and that he is surrounded by family who are just a variation of like him. Don’t feel sorry for any of them with the exception of Mary and her side of the family. Well done though.

Don't vote for this man!
Very well done, non sensationalized account of what it was like in the Trump family. Does it explain DJ Trump's dysfunction? Yes, it does very well delve into the many problems of lots of families in those times with distant father and mothers and children pitted against one another for any recognition, or even love. Does it humanize Trump? No. In fact, it should make people even warier of electing him again.
The most enlightening chapter was the prologue. I doubt if any pro Trump individuals will read this book, but they should.

Totally enthralling presentation
This is a well written story. Even if it wasnt true and aimed at Donald J Trump it would still rate as an enthralling account of a young girls journey in a family led by an egotistical patriarc. I felt I was on the journey with her. It was enjoyably narrated by the author. The fact that it was aimed at taking down her uncle Donald is neither here nor there. It displays reasons why he is such a nasty piece of bussiness but offers no excuse for his behavjiuor but condems him and his behaviour. I would look for any work written or narrated by this lady on any subject as she has a real talent.

Interesting read, but heavily biased
Good story about the Trump family history, but it seems overly biased in one direction.
Mary seems focused on the fact that Donald received undeserved praise from her grandfather, while her own father who was the oldest son, and in her eyes deserved all that Donald received, was overlooked. The reason that her father failed at a number of jobs (in and outside of the Trump empire) was not due to his drinking, but rather because he didn't get enough money and emotional support from his parents. Meanwhile, the other siblings who had stayed with the family business were incompetent, underhanded and were given everything they had in life.
Overall, the author comes across as petty and bitter, but the insight into some of the family dynamics does provide for an interesting listen.
