Late summer, 1963. Fresh from London and a recent cookery course, Alexandra has always loved a challenge. Which is why she now finds herself standing outside an imposing chateau in Provence. Waiting for her inside is three silent, rather hostile children who are to be her charges for the next month. They will soon be more friendly, she tells herself. All they need is some fun, good food and an English education. Far more of a challenge though is their father - an impossibly good-looking French count with whom she is rapidly falling in love.

When Lisa Jones and her boyfriend George take on the run-down Rocks Hotel, they aim to do for Mariscombe what Rick Stein did for Padstow and set up a chic maritime retreat. But renovating a hotel is about more than stripped wooden floors and Egyptian cotton sheets, particularly when the locals are shifty and unhelpful. Especially Bruno Thorne, the tall, dark and surly owner of the nearby Mariscombe Hotel, where life is one long holiday; for the staff, anyway.

Lizzie has just arrived in London, determined to make the best of her new life. Her mother may be keen that she should have a nice wedding in the country to a suitable man chosen by her, and Lizzie may be going to cookery school to help her become a good wife...but she definitely wants to have some fun first. It's 1963, and London is beginning to swing as Lizzie cuts her hair, buys a new dress with a fashionably short hemline and moves in with two of her best friends, one of whom lives in a grand but run-down house in Belgravia that has plenty of room for a lodger.

Dreadful narration
- By pdox on 17-03-21
Summary
From the very first day that they move to the Oddlode Valley, it's inevitable that young teacher Mo Stillitoe, recently separated socialite Diana Lampeter and cool, retired dressage diva Anke Brakespear will find their lives entangled. Despite their differing generations and backgrounds, the women are on a relocation collision course. As inept removal men deliver furniture - and even horses - to the wrong houses, other moves are being made…
Mo's bad-boy lover takes Diana's eye, Anke's flirtatious husband immediately suggests Mo hop into bed with him - and Diana's local heartthrob brother comes joyfully face to face with the Danish ice-maiden he posted on his wall as a teenager. As a long, hot Indian summer burns its embers into winter, the newcomers settle into their beautiful frost-hugged surroundings, generating enough heat to melt every heart in Oddlode.
New passions ignite and old flames are fanned amid the honeyed villages, enchanted gardens, haunted parkland and raucous country social life. The heat is on, and sparks fly - but is this just a flash in the pan or is somebody fuelling the fire?

Great story line
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The story has a 1000 characters and a ton of plot lines, but you just want to keep reading to see what becomes of them all.
What other book might you compare Tongue in Cheek to, and why?
The Summer Wedding, same author, and a great mix of characters.
Which character – as performed by Beth Chalmers – was your favourite?
Diana Lampeter, she was a fun character to listen to.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
TOWIE, Made in Chelsea, Dallas, Eastenders, Emmerdale all rolled into one leafy part of the Cotwolds
Any additional comments?
Please keep Beth Chalmers as narrator, she does an amazing job at projecting the characters and adjust her voice to suit

I had to give up half way through this book because I didn't warm to any of the characters and the storyline was very confusing. The narration was a bit monotone. I couldn't get into this book at all which is a shame be because I usually like Fiona Walker's writing

Silly text, over dramatic narrator
The narrator made a Danish person sound French and clearly hadn't even tried to look up pronunciation of the very few Danish words in the text before recording. It was over-dramatically performed, which made the story even more silly than necessary.
