About this listen

Life can be hard: your lover cheats on you; you lose a family member; you can’t pay the bills. And it can be great: you’ve had the hottest sex of your life; you get that plum job; you muster the courage to write your novel. Sugar - the once-anonymous online columnist at The Rumpus, now revealed as Cheryl Strayed, author of the best-selling memoir Wild - is the person thousands turn to for advice. Tiny Beautiful Things gathers the best of "Dear Sugar" in one place and includes never-before-published columns and a new introduction by Steve Almond. Rich with humor, insight, compassion - and absolute honesty - this book is a balm for everything life throws our way.

Critic reviews

"A realistic and poignant compilation of the intricacies of relationships." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"These pieces are nothing short of dynamite, the kind of remarkable, revelatory storytelling that makes young people want to become writers in the first place. Over here at the Salon offices, we're reading the columns with boxes of tissue and raised fists of solidarity, shaking our heads with awe and amusement." (Sarah Hepola, Salon)
"Charming, idiosyncratic, luminous, profane.... [Sugar] is remaking a genre that has existed, in more or less the same form, since well before Nathanael West’s Miss Lonelyhearts first put a face on the figure in 1933.... Her version of tough love ranges from hip-older-sister-loving to governess-stern. Sugar shines out amid the sea of fakeness." ( The New Republic)

A beautiful thing to behold

I never write reviews, in fact this is my first but this audiobook is such a treasure trove of humanness, I just had to.
Listen to this audiobook if your lost. Listen if your stuck and don’t know which way to turn. Listen if your out of touch with yourself and how you feel because you might just find yourself again.
This is a beautiful book.

What a joy!

Having Cheryl Strayed read this book was just the icing on the cake. Cheryl Strayed had once before inspired me when I had read her book, Wild. And here she is doing it again. I just loved her responses as Sugar, so much so, that now I want to own a copy of this book just to use as my personal guide and voice in times of difficulty😊

So beautiful - don't hesitate, listen right now!!

I loved Wild so I sought out any other books by Cheryl Strayed and I'm so glad I did! Her writing is extraordinarily touching and yet light. I was so moved by the stories of the people who wrote to the Dear Sugar column, and equally by Cheryl's replies. She's a spectacular writer, I couldn't stop listening, I finished the whole book in two days. So so beautiful, I urge you to listen to this right away, and then all her other books too. Strayed will be among your new favourite authors for sure.

Enlightening and compassionate

What made the experience of listening to Tiny Beautiful Things the most enjoyable?

That it was read by the author, I felt I was with her.

What did you like best about this story?

The authors direct way of delivering a take on situations with such compassion and humility

Which character – as performed by Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond (Intro) – was your favourite?

There were no characters, just situations. However I loved her explanation of when she and Mr Sugar were first together and they negotiated their sex life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it's a pick up here and there type of book.

Thank you, Dear Sugar

For anyone who wants to understand what it is to be human.

Strayed not only has an incredible ability to empathise but she cuts through the knots and weeds of people's lives, failings and struggles and takes the reader to the heart of the problem. She brings there, her own experiences and meaning, and enfuses each scene, laid bare her own shining light and insight.

Tiny beautiful things indeed

I loved this book and the perspective it gives you. Allowing you to realise it’s okay to feel all your feelings, while also acknowledging that things really could be so much worse. Cheryl has so much wisdom and life experience, her advice is helpful and so beautifully written/read. Thank you for the laughs and the tears and ultimately, thank you for sharing your tiny beautiful things.

Beautiful, inspiring, moving

The only downside of this audiobook was that I found myself moved to tears in public on several occasions! This amazing collection of raw, painful, heartbreaking letters and "Sugar's" honest and love filled responses is honestly one of the sweetest and most moving things I've ever read/heard. There's something for everyone in here - you will identify and empathise with so much from the columns. And the fact that it's read by Cheryl Strayed herself is such a bonus. What an amazing, inspiring woman. I'm recommending this to everyone I know!
