Summary

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was 13. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

Just beautiful

I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it, but in the years that have pasted I’ve faced unimaginable loss personally and weirdly listening to it now as an audiobook has given me a far greater appreciation of just beautifully this book deals with loss in its many forms and the impact on those affected. The narration is just wonderful and brought this book to life… it’s just left me wondering why had this amazing story never been adapted to a screen play or film !!

Beautiful and tender

This story is carefully woven and once finished the delicate threads remain with you. It can be summarised so easily however it is the unveiling of the characters that draws you in and leaves you with a sense of loss when the book is finished. So simply written, at the heart of the story it is about love in its many forms and true beauty and heroism. Worth reading

wise and insightful

Beautiful story, beautifully read. Well worth reading. It may perhaps seem like women's fiction but any thoughtful man will benefit from reading it.

Blown away by a fantastic book/audio

This book wrecked me - it's such a beautiful story and has so many great and important characters that weave together to create a group of people that support one of the most beautiful love stories I've read/heard, and Fern/Ambrose story just wouldn't exist without them.

Without doubt one of the best books in this genre - completely loved it.

Review

I finished this book early this morning while getting ready for work, however it has taken me this long to write a review as I don't think I have enough words to describe this beautiful book.

I think this is probably one of the best books I have read this year, and that is a very high accolade!

I wasn't too sure when I first turned on my audible app and started the book, but by about 10 minutes in I was hooked and a little bit in love ♡♡

This book had everything for me, love, hate, surprise, confusion and heartache.

If you have read the blurb of the book then you do not want me to give you another synopsis, and I don’t want to go on about too much in the book and spoil it for you, so just buy, beg or steal the book and read it ASAP.

A huge 6 ☆ and straight onto my favourite’s shelf

Touching, enjoyable tale

Any additional comments?

I initially thought 'not another Cyrano De Bergerac retelling, please' but the author alludes to that comparison and swiftly moves on from the letter writing device to tell a story woven with believable main characters and home truths about their flaws and strengths. Sad, touching and hopeful in turn, I enjoyed this book immensely.
