The funny and poignant autobiography of Jerome K Jerome, who is best known for his comic novel Three Men in a Boat. Jerome struggled against poverty and obscurity, not to mention his improbable name, for many years before Three Men in a Boat made him a celebrity and the friend of other celebrities. A man of deep human sympathies and principles, he lived through and engaged with, a time - like our own - of unprecedented changes and inventions.

Story
The Diary of Nobody (1892) created a cultural icon, an English archetype. Anxious, accident-prone, occasionally waspish, Charles Pooter has come to epitomize English suburban life. His diary chronicles encounters with difficult tradesmen, the delights of home improvements, small parties, minor embarrassments, and problems with his troublesome son. The suburban world he inhabits is hilariously and painfully familiar in its small-mindedness and its essential decency.

Candide and his tutor Pangloss travel the globe trying to follow the philosophy "All is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds". However, they are stung and let down at every turn, being robbed, tortured, and ridiculed, amongst other trials. On hearing about their often disasterous travels, a listener feels unfortunately less than empathetic, and can't help themselves laughing out loud at this very funny account of the trail our optimistic travellers take.

Trapped in rural Steeple Bumpleigh, a man less stalwart than Bertie Wooster would probably have given way at the knees. For among those present were Florence Craye, to who Bertie had once been engaged...and her new fiance 'Stilton' Cheesewright, who regarded Bertie as a snake in the grass...also Zenobia Hopwood and her guardian Lord Worplesdon, whose violent antipathy to 'Boko' Fittleworth amounted to obsession...and that biggest blot on the landscape, Edwin the Boy Scout.

Story
"This is a history and not a glorification of Mr. Polly, and I tell of things as they were with him.” So writes H.G Wells toward the end of his story of Mr. Polly, and indeed, the narrator’s voice throughout the book leaves us altogether ambivalent about his protagonist. The diminutive Everyman of the story is neither fully hero nor villain.

What's not to love
- By Caroline Detnon on 09-05-15
Summary
Martyrs to hypochondria and general seediness, J. and his friends George and Harris decide that a jaunt up the Thames would suit them to a ‘T’. But when they set off, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather-forecasts and tins of pineapple chunks – not to mention the devastation left in the wake of J.’s small fox-terrier Montmorency.
Three Men in a Boat was an instant success when it appeared in 1889, and, with its benign escapism, authorial discursions and wonderful evocation of the late-Victorian ‘clerking classes’, it hilariously captured the spirit of its age.

A trip along the Thames with Hugh Laurie
I never read this book before but have obviously heard about it so when I saw Hugh Laurie was the narrator I thought I don't have any excuse not to listen to this. I am glad I did. It's a wonderful plunge in a bygone society where three hypochondriacs and a dog go on a trip on the Thames. Jerome K Jerome really describes the scenery very well and it gives you an insight into what gentlemen used to get up to. Hugh Laurie is wonderful as always and the perfect person to read this book with his Cambridge accent. Enjoyed it immensly.

Too abridged to be worthwhile.
Well performed by the perfectly cast Hugh Laurie, but too much is missing. Get the full version instead; this is barely even enough to give you much more than a hint of the book's flavour. I 'm distressed to find myself saying this, because I love Hugh Laurie and I love Three Men In A Boat but I wish I hadn't spent a credit on this version.

Got this on repeat to get me through hard times
A wonderful 'Blackadder' esque performance from Hugh Laurie. I've used this book to send myself to sleep in these difficult times. The piano interludes between chapters are soothing.
It's worth noting that this is an abridged version of Three Men coming in at 2 hours and 20 minutes, full performances of this book tend to be about 6 hours so get unabridged if you want a longer experience.
That said a lot of fluff from the book is cut out in this version so the story isn't necessarily worse off for being shorter and focusing on the humour.

Hugh Laurie's perfect Novel to Perform
If Jerome K Jerome could have foreseen Audible then he would have been delighted that Hugh Laurie would narrate his book! in the similar vein to Jeeves and Wooster he did an excellent job and whilst it is a short book of 2.5 hours it flew by with excellent narration. If you know the Thames it makes an interesting view of the area and I really enjoyed this book

Utterly joyful, a jolly good ride
The river of life, really, is the theme told through this hilarious short river adventure of three dignified older English gentlemen and a dog. Hugh Laurie’s narration is captivating, giving life to little known author Jerome’s wit and witticisms of British life and manners. I’d swear John Cleese and friends were on deck. Not to be missed, and I’m so glad I didn’t!

Brilliant narration of a dull, dull book
I know how much of a classic this is, but Three Men is a tedious book. There is nothing I like about it. Laurie's narration is, however, fantastic. The peak was the gloomy, forlorn performance of "two black eyes". I actually giggled, at long last.

Maybe I missed something.
I'd heard so much about this book so I figured I'd try it out. It tried from the get-go to be funny, and occasionally succeeded. Three men, at turns lazy and incompetent but not unlikable set off for a two week boating trip. The flowery description parts were flowery and descriptive, the 'humorous interludes' were sometimes fun in a satirical way. It was surprisingly relate-able while still being a period piece. Short enough that I might give it another listen, but I'm still not certain why it's so well regarded.

Witty- especially in the beginning.
You really can't go wrong with Mr. Laurie, and his quirky humor is well matched in the story line. It is very funny or silly at times. Reminds me of Jeeves and Wooster. I wish he narrated more books!
