Summary

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

This epic, exuberant novel is one of the greatest coming-of-age stories in literature, chronicling David Copperfield's extraordinary journey through life as he encounters villains, saviors, eccentrics, and grotesques - including the wicked Mr. Murdstone, stouthearted Peggotty, formidable Betsey Trotwood, impecunious Micawber, and the odious Uriah Heep. Dickens' great novel (based, in part, on his own boyhood and which he described as a "favorite child") is a work filled with life, both comic and tragic.

Listen to Richard Armitage bring Dickens' words to life, and you'll understand why Virginia Woolf called David Copperfield "the most perfect of all the Dickens novels".

Delightful Dickens

A wonderful, sensitive and amusing reading or rather all embracing performance of this iconic book. I love Dickens but sometimes get a bit bogged down with the density of the language. This reading has convinced me that his writing comes alive when it is read aloud and all those varied characters are brought to life. Listening has even made the process of reading his work myself much easier .

A Superb Performance of Dickens' Masterpiece

Any additional comments?

I have tried so many times to read Dickens and have given up every time. So I decided to try an audiobok and I'm so glad I did. Richard Armitage's sublime performance has opened up a whole new world of storytelling for me. The vast array of voices and accents, the comic interpretation of some characters, the unbearable sadness of others were all amazingly good and I was often mesmerized by the performance. The pacing of the narration and the development of the characterisation were pitch perfect. Some male narrators find it hard to 'find a female voice' but Richard Armitage managed to find several wonderful ones.At the end of this very long book I was left feeling bereft, as if I had said goodbye to a very old and much-loved friend. I was left longing for more and so I shall definitely try some more Dickens. This 5* performance is definitely worthy of awards/prizes and I hope Audible will commission Richard to read more classic novels.

Excellent narration. Tone and speed mirrored the text. A long book but was fresh throughout.

Dickens brought to life

I always found Dickens rather a long-winded read, and I often as not get lost in his books, in the sense that I lose my place in all the verbiage. HOWEVER this reading redeems the story. I have never heard a story - any story - read as well as Richard Armitage reads this. Each character comes to life and the many different accents and tones of voice he uses are amazing. I do some reading aloud myself so I know how difficult it can be to make a book sing. This reading is truly wonderful and I cannot praise it more highly.

Could listen to over & over x

30+ brilliant hours of Dickens. The very best historical fiction that brings to life the 1800’s wonderfully. Descriptive in a way that I can visual every character & scene. Excellent narration by Richard Armitage x
(looking for another Dickens then Audibles Dickens collection of Nicholas Nickleby is fantastic being narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith - wonderful voice)

Excellent performance

A very long book. Thanks to Richard Armitage's great performance, I could appreciate it and follow the story very well, always knowing which character is speaking, etc. I listened to it over the course of a few days.
