About this listen

William Dorrit has been a resident of the Marshalsea debtors prison for so many years that he has gained the nickname "The Father of the Marshalsea". However, his suffering is eased by his close bond with youngest daughter Amy, or "Little Dorrit".

The dashing Arthur Clennam, returning to London after many years in China, enters their lives, and the Dorrits' fortunes begin to rise and fall.

A biting satirical work on the shortcomings of 19th century government and society.

Why this is one of Dickens' lesser known works I do not understand. It has his distinctive humour throughout and a superb collection of wonderful characters. Both comic and moving, it is a brilliant commentary on society and is remarkably relevant for today.

I've listened to a number of books read by Anton Lesser and am always amazed at his characerisations. Each has their own distinctive voice, bringing Dickens' rich characters to life brilliantly. I laughed everytime chatterbox Flora was speaking. I enjoyed this book and narration immensely.

Fantastic story and reader

I am in a state of addiction, devouring Dickens unabridged at a rate of knots. I blame it on a sudden need for many journeys and an ill relative. I have appreciated the company of many and various characters as I have been on motorways, early and late and often in a fretful state of mind. I have read Little Dorrit and seen it twice but neither reading or viewing quite comes close to the way Anton Lesser has brought it back to life for me. Subtle, vivid, passionate, lovely; thank you.

Thank you

I wasn't sure I'd like to hear Anton Lesser reading the whole of Little Dorrit - he played Merdle in the TV series. But I was pleasantly surprised! He brings out all the amusing little nuances of Dickens' writing - and there are many - and helps make it easy to understand. I adore the story from having seen the TV series with Claire Foy and Matthew McFadyen. I've read many Dickens novels, but didn't like all of them - some are too depressing. But I'm thoroughly enjoying this one! It's not too much of a spoiler to say that some of the characters who start off in a London prison don't stay there. There are interesting travels in Switzerland and Italy as well, so don't be put off by some dismal (but amusingly described) scenery at the beginning. If you loved Ruth Jones as the garrulous Flora, you won't be disappointed by Lesser's characterisation - and Mr F's aunt! After a month I'm only three-quarters through the audio book having listened to it every night - you do get your money's worth! Well worth investing in, I'd say. Jackie.

Wonderfully amusing characters - Wonderfully read!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes definitely

Who was your favorite character and why?

Pancks. He had the courage to do the right thing and expose Casby for what he really was. Plus, he uncovered the Dorrit fortune...mind you that had it's draw backs!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The death and exposing of Mr. Merdle and his "Ponzy Scheme" way before Charles Ponzi was even born! I thought this was quite uncanny as we have just experienced something so similar in recent years

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Little Dorrit seemed to lose the Father to his fortune and how she longed for the happier days in the Mashalsea

Any additional comments?

Great narration from Anton Lesser! Not my favourite Dickens novel, but a great story none the less.

A good story with one particularly uncanny twist!

How absolutely brilliant is Anton Lesser? I have listened to this book read by several people, but nobody comes close.

The book is also excellent; great descriptions of things and places and depiction of characters still all too recognisable these days; passages by turns hilarious and touching.

Great.

Thank you Charles Dickens for such a beautiful story. There are some beautiful messages in all of Charles Dicken's books, and it is always the kind and loving people with the biggest hearts that find fortune, but not in the shape of money. This book has such a beautiful love story, but is also an excellent, so well thought out and written novel that keeps you interested until the end. Charles Dickens had a marvelous way, of enriching all his books with so many wonderful character that all play their part in weaving together such a clever and amazing story. He was a genius of writing and story telling. I loved the characters of Amy (Little Dorrit) Arthur Clennam, Mr Panks! (wonderful character!) and John Chivery! he was such a selfless character, as was Amy and Arthur. Cried at the end, but also a happy ending! Highly recommend, this is my second book read by Anton Lesser, he's a fabulous narrator, reads with so much emotion and character and interest. Highly recommend The Old Curiosity Shop too, also narrated by Anton. 😊

A Beautiful Story With Some Wonderful Characters.

The clear voice and comfortable pace of the reader allows Dickens' delicious prose, and wit, to shine forth. Amy Dorrit's quiet patience and loyal love is hard for some modern readers to accept, but this story, and this reading, shows that being strong doesn't have to mean being loud, or even selfish.

Most stories have some one thing that divides the cast: good/bad, generous/greedy, humble/proud, etc. In Little Dorrit, the division seems to be between the self-centred and the self-sacrificing; those who do good to get credit in their moral ledgers, and those who do good because it is the right thing to do. And neither side can really understand the other, though Dickens gives us a good chance to try and see both points of view.

A powerful story, excellently read.

In fairness, I’ve yet to encounter a poor Dickens novel, and I’ve only 3 left to listen to, Great expectations, Our mutual friend & The mystery of Edwin Drood.
Rigaud to me is the greatest achievement in this story, and his cat & mouse game with Mrs Clenham at the end is sublime writing, and immensely suspenseful.
I personally found the saccharine sentimentality of the chief protagonist a little too hard to swallow at times, but that aside there are some terrific characters in this novel, Pancks, Merdle, & Flintwinch in particular.
Not my favourite personally, but still definitely worth reading/listening to, and Anton Lesser masters the voice characterisations brilliantly.
