Summary

An ordinary day. The end of ordinary life.

One morning in June, Abi had her to-do list—drop the kids to school, get coffee and go to work. Jacob had a bad headache so she added 'pick up steroids'. She returned home and found the man she loved and fought and laughed with for 20 years lying on the bathroom floor.

And nothing would ever be the same again.

But this is not a pity memoir. It's about meeting your person. And crazed late-night Google trawls. It's about the things you wished you'd said to the person who matters then wildly over-sharing with the barista who doesn't know you at all. It's about sushi and the wrong shoes and the moments you want to shout 'cut'. It's about the silence when you are lost in space and the importance of family and parties and noise.

It's the difference between surviving and living. It's a reminder that, even in the worst times, there is light ahead.

It's a love story.

Beautifully honest

This indeed is not a pity memoir, it is so much other than that. The honesty of Abi Morgan in sharing her experiences is profound, highly recommended.

A beautiful book

I so enjoyed this book. The writing was superbly brought to life by the narrator. The story is tragic but I have to agree with the title! I loved the writing.

Can’t stop listening!

Deeply moving, sad and emotionally but at the same time encouraging. A glimpse of hope in brutal reality of illnesses.

Profoundly moving

I went through the same gruelling breast cancer treatment as the author, but did not have to cope at the same time with a partner recovering from brain damage who did not know me, I found this memoir profoundly moving. Most of all I appreciated the author’s honesty, describing their family situation and her own feelings and behaviour “warts and all”. I’m grateful to her for sharing her story in this way and wish her and her family every possible happiness

Unbelievable- raw, honest, powerful

Just exceptional - an absolute must read. A fantastic account of suffering and surviving and a reminder that happy endings in so far as illness is concerned does not mean “back to normal”. A stern reminder to find something to love in each day - you never know when your world might turn on its head.
