Introduction to Classics

For someone brought up on pulp thrillers, this novel was a pleasant surprise. Although 'old-fashioned', the story would be relevant in any decade or century - lovers unable to be together due to a promised marriage proposal, and devious murky partnerships made for a great listen.

Te Woman in White

I loved every minute of this book. Wilkie Collins is a master story teller, I found myself chocked with feelings of the helplessness for the heroine. Gabriel Woolf is the best as a narrator, I adore his voice! I now look for stories narrated by him.

Well read, poorly edited

A good book, very well read and very good value but it is not as well edited as other books I have listened to. There are a lot of fluffs and mis-readings left in. Although it works in some cases - the current author/character is often musing rather than offering a well-thought out piece of writing - it is jarring many cases.

Gripping Classic Novel

One I have never got round to reading but will do again. Well performed by the narrator adopting differing voices for the various characters who take it in turn to carry the story forward. Allowed me to become immersed in the 1800's way of life, the social structures and relationships.

A stunning listen

I have to admit at the outset that this is one of my favourite novels. Without the need to agonise over Victorian social problems which Dickens feels, Collins produces a rattling good detective story.
His characters are deliciously overblown and the plot wonderfully convoluted.

Gabriel Woolf understands the characters and gives each one a distinctive voice and their own personality.

This would be a must if it were full-price: at ?5 everyone should rush to download it immediately.

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins

This is still a ripping good yarn with an excellent plot which incorporates twists and turns. The characters are well developed although I did find myself a little impatient with the insipid Laura Fairley but no doubt she was a woman of her time.

This book is excellently narrated by Gabriel Wolfe whose voice is perfectly suited to a victorian novel and lends it some gravitas.

At ?5.00 a pop what have you got to lose? This book should be on everyone's reading list.

great classic novel

quirky classic story . i loved it, it took me a while to get into d flow but once in, i was hooked and couldnt wait to see the final outcome. there was one or two funny scenes and i still shake with laughter as i think of them!

creepy victorian tale

Great story kept me interested to the end. Narrator excellant - varied voices in a believable way.
Found some background noises irritating - this the only flaw.

Best romantic thriller and currently my top novel

I have listened to this audiobook ten to fifteen times, and I don't tire of it.

It is a lovely story, and one that will grip you to the end. Some friends were listening to it while driving to Switzerland for a summer holiday; they were near the end when they arrived, but it was so engaging that they couldn't unpack but had to wait in the car to find out what happened.

The Wikipedia entry states:
In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer listed The Woman in White number 23 in "the top 100 greatest novels of all time", and the novel was listed at number 77 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.

As you can see, I rate it higher.

Gabriel Woolf's narration is outstanding, even if there are some slips and the production could have been tidied up. If you are put off by it, you aren't taking in the story. He also narrates 'Treasure Island', and I highly recommend that too.
