About this listen

Published 10 years after Collins’s most popular novel The Woman in White, Man and Wife centres on the confused and inequitable marriage laws of 19th-century Britain, reflecting the author’s own antipathy toward the institution. The plot follows the fortunes of a woman who, committed to marriage with one man, comes to believe that she may have inadvertently married his friend, according to the archaic laws of Scotland and Ireland. Collins shows himself to be a masterly storyteller, seamlessly moving the action from a country house to a suburb of London, and into a world of deceit and murder.

Superb!

This is undoubtedly one of those books which I would struggle to read a paper copy. It's long and here are plenty of sections unnecessary to the story. But when one is listening to the audio version, they are just delightful, and I wouldn't remove a word of it. The narration was very enjoyable and the story well structured and engaging. I'm very glad I found this!

A thrilling tale, expertly performed

As usual with Collins, the plot stretches credibility but Nicolas Boulton's performance is superb and certainly held my attention. His reading of "Lady Lundie" as the quavering duchess-type is almost comical, very appropriate for a character who is faintly ridiculous.

Wilkie’s description of the unfairness of marital expectations

As with most Victorian novels of its time the story can be complex in the telling, but what a great story. Wilkie tackles the unfairness of society and the laws of the time against women admirably. The story is well written and equally well read

Victorian morality tale

Any novel you have to resort to Google to see if everyone is okay before reaching the end is a page-turner! Interesting social commentary made the cringe-making sexism/paternalism/fainting fits (of its time) bearable. I wanted to throw something at Arnold to wake him up! Strong female characters for the time.

Excellent Narration

An interesting story giving a view into past ideas about marriage, including how the laws varied in Ireland, England and Scotland.

I must make special mention of the narrator who did a fantastic job throughout, especially with the Scottish accents (I am a Scot myself). He got the “posh Scottish” accent perfectly.
