Summary
The third Dragonriders of Pern novel from the New York Times best seller Anne McCaffrey.
There has never been a dragon quite like Ruth - he's small, agile, able to communicate with fire lizards and has an uncanny ability to know exactly when he is. His bond with the young Lord Holder Jaxom is uniquely strong thanks to their unlikely connection and the fact that nearly everybody else on Pern thought the diminutive dragon wouldn't survive to adulthood. With Jaxom set to inherit control of his Hold, the pair is banned from fighting Thread, their flying time strictly limited at the insistence of the Weyrleaders and Lord Holders.
Stuck halfway between the Holds and Weyrs, Jaxom and Ruth decide to train in secret, learning how to fight Thread and how to fly through time. Their illicit flights seem like a small rebellion against the expectations of their elders, until they find themselves in the path of danger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all....

The best dragon rider book.
The story is great but the narrator isn't very good in my opunion & the creepy voice used for Ruth is really bad. Frankly it ruins the character almost completely & detracts from the performance & story, which is a massive shame.

Excellent
I first read this book when I was a teenager roughly 12/13 years old in my school library ..... now I've heard it at age 48 nearly 36 years later - still interesting and entertaining all these years later - I am blessed with a good memory - so I have to give myself a good break between books - but even now after all this time I was anticipating from memory some of the characters reactions! 😁

Good audible book
Enjoyed this audible book (read the paperback 35yrs ago). Narrator was different to the 1st 2 books of this series but found I preferred him.

Another thrilling tale, 1 small quibble
Never get tired of Anne McCaffrey 's dragon tales. This one of Ruth and Jaxom showing what determination can prove.
My quibble however is that across all the different Pern books now in audible each narrator has their own way of pronouncing the characters names. I personally find it annoying that there is no set way. The authors family must be able to provide the correct way that Anne had in her mind while writing. and those co-written with family members the same. To have that continuity would make the story flow much better.

Excellent narration except when voicing characters
Really enjoyable when Mr Jameson is reading the narration. However, when reading speech, his choice of voices for most of the characters is bizarre. As others have mentioned, particularly strange is his choice to voice the young Ruth as an old man, and Sharra's voice is just plain weird. I've no idea what he was trying to do there.
But it's a lovely story, and overall a fun listen.

Justice done to my favourite Pern novel
Loved this and the variety of voices for the different characters... I especially liked Ruth's voice being brought to life 😊
