Summary

It was 11:00 pm when I checked my email for the last time and turned off my phone for what I hoped would be forever.

No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio, or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce.

The Way Home is a modern-day Walden - an honest and lyrical account of a remarkable life lived in nature without modern technology. Mark Boyle, author of The Moneyless Man, explores the hard-won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the stream, foraging, and fishing.

What he finds is an elemental life, one governed by the rhythms of the sun and seasons, where life and death dance in a primal landscape of blood, wood, muck, water, and fire - much the same life we have lived for most of our time on earth. Revisiting it brings a deep insight into what it means to be human at a time when the boundaries between man and machine are blurring.

I humbling story

Listen and question your environmental concious and dependency on technology. I loved this story, it's message and how much I felt connected to the author and his journey as he lives without technology (or his definition of).

Thoughtful and inspiring

Beautiful words, beautiful sentiments, beautifully read. This book doesn’t shy away from discussing the inherent contradictions that from living a life free from modern technology. I have no wish to follow in his footsteps but it has inspired me to think more deeply about my life - and make changes.

How much is enough

The balance between a comfortable life and secure retirement vs living a satisfying healthy life but with a lower standard of living. As a corporate wage slave of 3 decades this is a question I have often considered. My one attempt to give up the 9 to 5 failed due to not finding a low enough cost house with no mortgage. I take my hat off to your enterprises that have enabled you to pursue lifestyle de-escalation. A thought provoking read.

Certainly makes you think

Mark's journey into a life free of technology and all the clutter some of it brings is very interesting. Mark's view of our dependence on the social media, email and the consideration of how little time we now have is exactly right. the reflections of how out of touch we are with our surrounding countryside is very accurate and probably the saddest point in the book. I found the book very interesting; there's good humour and a lot to be learned from Mark's experiences.

a joy of a book

I enjoyed this book despite me coming across it on my smartphone and feeling I should have read this as a printed version. its a true and in many ways sad insight of how quickly things are changing but hopefully seeds a change for a better future.

insightful and reflective

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, so much so that I have devoured it in 2 days when audiobooks typically take me a month. The book has been entertaining and even funny however the value in this book really comes from Mark's reflections and these often resulted in my own self reflection. I doubt I'll ever look at technology quite the same again. Thank you?

Fabulous book

Such an inspirational story, and the paradox of listening to it on Audible makes it even more powerful. I feel this book has been my friend for the past few days: interesting, rambling and always challenging me to think.
