Summary

Five-year-old Jimmy Higgins is brazenly snatched from the middle of a busy airport; but this is no ordinary kidnapping. Jimmy’s mother is Scarlett, a reality TV star who, dying of cancer, entrusted the boy to her friend Stephanie Harker. Now Stephanie, reaching into the past to discover the motive behind the abduction, soon encounters a shocking tale of murder and conspiracy, and is faced by the most difficult choice of her life.

Not VM Best

Oh dear what a disappointment. This book started so well, then became quite tedious. Followed by a pretty silly ending. I’m a great fan of VM, but sorry Val this wasn’t your best.

Amazing unseen twists!

Another brilliant book by this talented author! I was instantly pulled into the story, feeling the characters emotions. The twists in the plot grab you and pull you even deeper, I felt like I was there in the book!! Bloody brilliant!!

Shame about the ending

I really enjoyed this, listened in just a few long sessions, but really, the ending .... what a shame.

Cleverly written and Narrated

This story has had bad reviews, but if you have had and experienced the situations in this book you will know it is very well written with an insight into the different human nature's and feelings of the various characters. To enjoy this book, you should have an empathy for the main characters, Scarlet and Stephanie. The story of their lives being told by Stephanie to an FBI agent after Jimmy is taken, takes you through love, tragedy and obsession. The hunt to find Jimmy and who took him makes up the ending of a very good tale.

Just not credible.

I found it really hard to believe the characters would act the way they did. Especially the ending which felt lazy and I'll thought out.

Story line

I always enjoy her books as the story lines are different. they do not follow a formula.

Great with reservations

This was my first dip into Val McDermid’s writing, so did not know what to expect. Her writing style is excellent and made easy listening. However, the storyline was not really my cup of tea, although I stuck with it to the end. Guessed who dun-nit about three quarters through, although not before then...another indication of good writing style and devious plot line. I found the ending disappointingly unbelievable. So I am now left with the problematic decision about whether to try more of Val’s books to ensure that I make a fair judgement about whether or not this popular and very well known author is for me!
