Critic reviews

"Frightening, sensual.... Anne Rice will live on through the ages of literature.... To read her is to become giddy as if spinning through the mind of time, to become lightheaded as if our blood is slowly being drained away." ( San Francisco Chronicle)

Great book, AMAZING narration

We all know how good this book is, but if you want any audiobook version, it MUST be narrated by Simon Vance.

His voice work is always stunning - both in this series and in others.

So much better than "Interview"

"Interview" was a veritable chore to read.
This was an agreeable read filled with well developed characters with a passion for their un-life delivered admirably by Simon Vance

Fantastic book - whirlwind tour of vampire history

This is a brilliant book - picking up from where Interview with the Vampire left of - fleshing out the character of Lestat. The book is mainly told in flashback, not only of Lestat, but other significant vampire characters, so you get a flashback within a flashback. There are some continuity differences between this novel and Interview with the Vampire. I am not sure whether this is a bit of retroactive continuity by Rice to re-structure the character of Lestat following the success of Interview, to make him less of the shallow killer to the Lestat we find in this book.

Fantastic story, gripping ,but the narrator....

Occasionally goes from French accent to Count Dracula transalvania accent and it's pretty and slightly hilarious. The book is brilliant piece of story telling. I usually can't tolerate weird narrators but the story was powerful enough to overlook the weird accents. Enjoy

Couldn't take the earphones out!

'Couldnt take the earphones out', is the Audible version of 'couldn't put it down', right? Well, maybe.

I first read Interview with the Vampire in the 90s, just as the movie came out, and never continued the journey, until now. Having recently watched the dreary movie Queen of the Damned' I read reviews of that and discovered that it incorporated elements of this story, so I was intrigued.

Well, Anne Rice has not disappointed, and I can see why she was disassociated herself from the Queen of the Damned movie. This 2nd chapter in the series has a lot to live up to thanks to the tragedy of Claudia in Interview, but similar tragedies occur that keep the page turning, or keeps the finger away from the pause button.

I love the back stories of Armand and Marius and the ensemble cast are all beautifully written. Simon Vance is a perfect narrator, with his unique command of accents and voices, you know who's talking even if the book does not tell you.

I was going to take a break from the series and listen to something else, but the ending of this story has driven me to download the next book.

Bravo.
