Summary

"[A] huge and sprawling tale of horror." (The New York Times Book Review)

Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women.

Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale that challenges everything we believe in.

Love the Narator

And the story is pretty good too. I didnt expect the ending. It made a change from usually being able to predict how things would pan out.

Breathtaking

Anne is such an astounding author. She goes where few will with her exquisite wordsmithery and brave stories. I have never wanted characters to be more real than the complex and utterly human ones she creates. This book is maddening in the best way and put he's you completely in the minds of each character yet allows you to feel as if you are an investigator, trying to understand the nuances of the characters and their lives whilst remaining gripped by the bigger picture. I've never felt so in love with a character before and suce deep regret and sorrow that they are not real. Anne you're amazing.

Excellently read.

I read this as a book many years ago and was keen to revisit but was wary of how it might be read. However, the narrator is superb. She reads as someone who loves the story and every line has been considered. The voices are subtle, but distinct. The only voice that didn’t work in my view was that of Michael Curry. That said, the rest was so well done that I would not trust anyone else with the next books in the series and I’m pleased that Kate Reading completes them. For those that are new to the Witching Hour and Anne Rice - brace yourself for a real treat. They don’t make them like this any more.

Great performance of a good story

Kate Reading once again gives a wonderful performance and brings the characters to life. The story was typical of Anne Rice- just enough to make you uncomfortable and also make you think what if? On to the next one.
