Summary

A brooding and suspenseful thriller that will appeal to fans of Rachel Abbott, Mark Edwards and Shalini Boland.

Faye and her husband, Hugh, have had a traumatic year. Wanting to start again, the couple decides to buy a large run-down property in North Yorkshire, hoping to leave the past behind them.

However, the tranquillity is soon ruined when Faye begins to awake, every night, to the sound of somebody creeping around the bedroom. She tries to explain it to Hugh, frightened for the safety of their children, Aiden and Poppy, but Hugh dismisses her claims, thinking she is heading for another breakdown.

But when Faye discovers some diaries that contain secrets about the family that lived in the house before them, she starts to wonder if the intruder might be closer to home than she first thought.

off-putting prinunciation

worth a listen despite the dreadful pronunciation of several everyday words, rather annoying really but a good story nevertheless

Disappointing and horrendous narration

This book sounded so good and was very disappointing. The narration has to be the worst I’ve ever heard with little intonation, mis-pronunciation of words. Wouldn’t recommend, glad I didn’t pay for it.

Weak plot with no suspense

This was my first experience of this author. I try to be fair with my reviews but there is no escaping that this was a long tedious listen. The story is told entirely in the first person by the main character Faye whose intense and exagerrated reactions and emotions to everything throughout the entire book made me think of a neurotic drama queen. I found myself not caring about the characters or the outcome. For me the plot is very weak and the reveal at the end is equally as weak and uninspiring. The writng style is OK although there is unnecessary use of the f word and the author fails to create any suspense. The narrator had a tough job bringing this story to life but I also found the narration monotonous and lacking in any real emotion. The narrator also made occasional pronounciation errors throughout the book which is surprising for a professional narrator. I cannot recommend this book at all and wished I had given up and returned it to Audible for a refund.

Mispronounced words

The story was OK. Good for a mindless listen when doing household chores. The narrator’s voice was nice to listen to, but SO many words badly pronounced. Waiting for the next wrong mispronounced word took away from the story.

Awful pronunciation.

The narrators inability to pronounce so many words distracts from the story which seems to be quite good.

Mundane but managed to finish it!

The narration made this difficult to listen too. Monotone, bland and no excitement. The story could have been made so much more exciting with a decent narration. I managed to listen to the end. It was ok. Glad to have finished.

Nothing to see there folks

This story isn’t very original so you’d hope that the writer would do something to transform a haunted house. New family moves in visit by restless spirits that slowly drive the family insane. But alas, no twist, no turns just a really basic story. I did finish it and I think I kept waiting for something to happen but it didn’t so unless you’ve just got time to burn. I would probably tell you to skip this one.

terrible terrible narration

I tried but could not get through this book due to the truly terrible narration. The narration was flat and toneless with no intonation, variation in speed or emphasis. The narrator has no apparent understanding of how to pronounce many words including some very basic words, and often confuses two words that are spelled the same but pronounced (and mean) very different things (like "content") - which totally changes the meaning of the sentence. I can't rate the book as I just could not get through it. I have read another by the author which was good but I hope this narrator has not done any others. this really is a case of "don't give up your day job"..
