About this listen

The RMS Titanic sailed from Southampton en route for New York on her maiden voyage with 2,228 passengers and crew on board. On 14 April, 1912, at twenty minutes before midnight, sailing at almost full speed, she struck an iceberg and sank in just two and a half hours. Over 1500 lives were lost.

This is the story of a great tragedy described by the surviving passengers, officers, and crew who were on board that night. Firsthand accounts help to explain why so few of the passengers took to the lifeboats and later describe the miraculous survival of those forced to jump into the icy waters of the North Atlantic. The story of the Titanic is ultimately one of simple human loss and these laconic Edwardian voices bring it alive.

Informative

I enjoyed this and thought it was well researched, though some of the archive voices were quite faint and therefore difficult to hear.

Very moving

This is easily the best book on the Titanic that I have come across. Many documentaries and books have been around this year but none so moving or informative as this. The reason being that this book has first hand accounts spoken by the passengers and crew who were actually on the ship. Such personal anecdotes and accounts really hit home what it was like for each individual on the ship - whether first class, second class, steerage or crew - and their stories stayed with me for days. Highly recommended.

Fascinating

Great listen. Very informative and brought the era to life. It sounds cliched but it's easy to forget that these were real people and it all really happened. The testimony of the individuals is very moving and it lays to rest myths about panic and repression. Clearly until very late in the day very few people believed she'd sink..

A recollection from those who were actually there.

Brilliant. Flew through it in two days. Amazing to hear first hand witness testimony.
