Summary

She’s restoring the old family home on the hill. And unearthing something evil.

In the tourist town of Wharton, on the coast of Lake Superior, Tess Bell is renovating her old family home into a bed-and-breakfast during the icy dead of winter…

As the house’s restoration commences, a shuttered art studio is revealed. Inside are paintings Tess’s late grandfather, beloved and celebrated artist Sebastian Bell, hid away for generations. But these appear to be the works of a twisted mind, almost unrecognizable as paintings she and others familiar with his art would expect. The sinister canvases raise disturbing questions for Tess, sparking nightmares and igniting in her an obsession to unearth the truth around their origins.

What evil has been locked away for so many years? The ominous brushstrokes, scratching at the door, and moving shadows begin to pull Tess further and further into the darkness in this blood-chilling novel of suspense by the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Keepers of Metsan Valo.

Ruined by Narrator

I really love the atmosphere of an old fashioned ghost story, and this was no disappointment. However, the droning rasp of the narrator absolutely ruined the whole thing for me. Had I not used a credit for this on audible, I would have given up half way through or less. Definitely will avoid her in future, a real shame as I really enjoy Wendy Webb’s books!

Enjoyable but there are a couple of things..

I haven't yet finished, but I'm compelled to make a note of my feelings on this so far.

It's a good story, I am enjoying it but I have 2 dislikes about this audiobook. I do like a book focused on paranormal activity.

1. I'm not a huge fan of the narrator. She's not terrible by any means, but personally I do prefer books read by narrators with non-American accents. I'm not from the US, and I do like to find narrators with an accent from my country if I can. It's more familiar and comfortable to me.
She sounds a little droning sometimes, especially when she's trying to put on a lower tone to represent a male character. I don't mind if a narrator uses their same, normal tone for all dialogue, but I understand why they may try to change it up a bit.
There was also a section where a character was described as having something like an Irish/Scottish accent, that just didn't sound very good when she tried to emulate that.

2. I've read 2, I think, of Wendy Webb's books now. I've noticed she does tend to reuse the same sentences/phrases/words. I feel like I noticed this in the previous book, but I don't remember what. In this book I have heard phrases like "locked eyes" and "stomach knot" too often, and too close together.
Also, when talking about the house, it is almost always referred to by it's name, "La Belle Vie". You don't need to constantly name the house, if you just said "the house" I'd know which one you were talking about.
Small nitpick, but it just feels repetitive.
