About this listen

Ann Rule was working on the biggest story of her career, tracking the trail of victims left by a brutal serial killer. Little did this future best-selling author know that the savage slayer she was hunting was the young man she counted among her closest friends.

Everyone's picture of a natural winner, Ted Bundy was a bright, charming, and handsome man with a promising future as an attorney. But on January 24, 1989 Bundy was executed for the murders of three young women - and had confessed to taking the lives of at least thirty-five more women from coast to coast. Ann Rule, who kept in constant contact with Bundy throughout the investigation, tells his story as no other person can, capturing the essence of his magnetic power, unholy compulsion, and demonic double life.

Available for the first time on audio, this shocking true story is an unforgettable listening experience. In an emotional reading, Rule tells us about Ted Bundy - the man she thought she really knew...the stranger beside her.

Gripping, poignant tragic, well narrated.

Though there is some language that doesn't date well, I cannot recommend this enough. Anne Rule's writing is honest, compassionate, and involving. It's easy to forget how familiar the ending to the story is, because the way it's told keeps the reader in the moment, a real lesson in wisdom and fallibility. Some descriptions are gut wrenching at times, but don't feel fetishised or gratuitous.

fantastic

I heard about this from a true crime group om part of. It lived up to the hype. It's long so great for people like me who listen yo these things when cleaning and need a distraction. the writer was close the Ted so you get a new perspective on an old and well known true crime story

A great LONG listen

Did not want this book to end. I’ve watched and read many stories about ted but this was absolutely brilliant and different to all the others, constantly had this on while working, in gym, walking, driving and even to go sleep,

So captivating

Was good to have a personal account of a person others have a lot of opinions on and who has been sensationalised beyond all good taste and sensibility. I always just wanted a proper profile of this personality type and I feel that was delivered. It is overly long and I found the agonising over this lost friend to be slightly too much. That said, the author’s insights are just excellent. I had been looking for a more human account of this twisted individual, rather than the usual serving of awe and hyperbole. I feel the author firmly puts the paradoxes within this individual into a scientific truth backed up by experience. It’s very clear how this person manipulated his way through life. It’s a damning indictment to society that young women are raised to be helpful and thusly are more easily preyed upon. He never asked men for help with his boat, his books, his briefcase etc. I am against the death penalty -but in this case, I must say, his endless appeals and narcissistic actuations just had to end.

Answered some questions I still had

This is a really good listen. It's a bit longer than I expected, but is very well researched and written. It covers Ted Bundy very well. Definitely a good but.
