Summary

A runaway queen. A reluctant prince. And a quest that may destroy them both.

Eight years have passed since the Battle of the Serpent. But in the icy north, Lady Nore of the Court of Teeth, has reclaimed the Ice Needle Citadel. There she is using an ancient relic to create monsters of stick and snow who will do her bidding and exact her revenge.

Suren, child queen of the Court of Teeth, and the one person with power over her mother, fled to the human world, where she lives feral in the woods. Lonely, and still haunted by the merciless torments she endured in the Court of Teeth, she bides her time by releasing mortals from foolish bargains. She believes herself forgotten until the storm hag Bogdana chases her through the night streets. Suren is saved by none other than Prince Oak, heir to Elfhame, to whom she was once promised in marriage and who she has resented for years.

Now seventeen, Oak is charming, beautiful and manipulative. He's on a mission that will lead him into the north, and he wants Suren's help. But if she agrees, it will mean guarding her heart against the boy she once knew and a prince she cannot trust, as well as confronting all the horrors she thought she had left behind.

HB does it again

A beautifully woven story, full of Holly's usual charm, grit and a little gore! A little reminiscent of King's Fairytale

Another enticing novel from Holly

I started this audible thinking this won’t compare to the draw of the cruel princes charisma. However I was slowly but surely drawn into the lives and stories of the characters. Not as intensely as before but still caught up in the storyline nonetheless. To sum up a great listen and worth the credit, looking forward to the next one coming out !!

Doubtful at first delighted at last!

Another excellent story from Holly Black. Imagery and characterisation assured once more and use of magic inventive and consistent. One small gripe, will new narrators please check that pronunciation with old ones !

Enjoyable

I liked the book, the reader is great but I somehow feel like there was something missing in the plot. Still, I can’t wait to read the next book.

Loved it

Loved it, inhaled it, tortured by how long I'll have to wait for the next. I was a huge fan of The Folk of the Air series and this book is a welcome addition to that world. Gripping and filled with twists and turns (some of the twists are a little obvious but nonetheless how they play out is engaging). The performance is pretty good, it's sometimes hard to tell the male voices apart, I don't love the narration as much as Caitlin Kelly's but it's still good.

Enjoyed but ends of cliffhanger

I love all Holly Black books, and this was no exception. It was super interesting seeing the events from Ren’s perspective. But a warning - it ends on a cliffhanger and I was shocked and devastated when it ended… it seemed to end so suddenly. Now to wait for the next instalment 😭
