Summary

Hear the second book in The Long Winter trilogy!

They decimated Earth during the Long Winter. Now the Grid has returned, and they won't stop until the human race is extinct. On a ruined world, humanity's last survivors fight against impossible odds. In their darkest hour, they discover a new hope for survival. But it comes at an unthinkable price, with consequences that will change everything.

We thought the war was over. We were wrong. After the Long Winter, Emma Matthews and James Sinclair hoped life would get back to normal. They've settled down in Camp Seven and welcomed their first child, a daughter. And they have waited and watched the sky for any signs of the Grid's return. When NASA discovers that several asteroids have broken from the Kuiper Belt and are headed for Earth, James instantly realizes the truth: the Grid is back.

And this battle will be one to the very end. As he and his team prepare for humanity's last stand in space and on the ground, Emma makes a discovery closer to home, one that will change life for her and James once again. With war raging around them, Emma and James fight to keep their family alive.

In the cold darkness, humanity splinters. New alliances emerge. At every turn, Emma and James face new dangers and question whom to trust. Just when it seems that all hope is lost, James uncovers what may be the key to humanity's survival. But it comes with enormous risks. To implement his plan, he and Emma will have to survive the Grid and another, even more deadly enemy. One thing is certain: their gambit will change the future of the human race forever.

Just pointless, I do not wish to offend, but

Not just a pointless transposable plot with baby talk. But completely one dimensional as well. No offence, I question the veracity of writing such as this. it's free and I can't bear to listen to it any more. Drivel. My apologies

Good yarn but parts felt familiar

For a sequel, this wasn’t too bad of a listen. Some of it felt too drawn out. Some of it felt like I was listening to Expeditionary Force. Arthur could be Skippy’s twin. The Narrator for Emma needs to do some work on her British accent. It was... just odd. Like Brightwell was a geordie, went to a posh public school and lost the accent but kept the pronunciation. Odd.

It’s a shame but I don’t think I care enough about any of them to bother with book 3.

Great book. left hanging at the end.

I am not a huge fan of the James Emma James Emma James Emma... you'll understand that when you read it. And the narrative by Edwardo always sounds so full of "despair" . I know they are in a desperate situation but there is some happier moments but still the tone of despair never ceases. saying all of that I still rate it very highly and will by the third the moment available.

Loving this series

Absolutely obsessed with this series of books since I first started listening to winter world. This series would make an amazing tv programme. Well written and the story line is brilliantly thought out.

Good second book

The story didn't go the way I expected, but it didn't stop my enjoyment. Overall I thought it was very good, although I do find Emma annoying. As with the first book, the narrator was excellent. Looking forward to the final installment

A great second book

This did not disappoint me, I really enjoyed the first and this was just as good. The plot is easy enough to follow just suspend your disbelief at all things science and go with the flow. The author does try to give some sort of explanation for us slower listeners but it is easier just to accept than to understand.

Again the goodies are good and the baddies are annoying, there is the proper amount of peril just to keep your interest but not so much that you feel that you are on a permanent roller coaster. I need a bit of a brain break sometimes and constant peril does not improve my enjoyment of a book.

One could leave the series here and use your own imagination to complete the trilogy but I am invested now and have downloaded the third and final instalment.

Rubbish. Gave up halfway through

(Spoilers) I can put up with the odd plot hole and bending scientific facts, this is sci-fi after all but this is nonsense. I only wish I hadn’t waited a credit buying book 3 on the strength of the first book.
1. Why would the alien race that wants the power of our star offer us the tech to get to another solar system? Wouldn’t they also want the energy from that star as well seeing as that’s what they do so recurring problem.
2. Who is this James? Doctor, roboticist, spec-ops personnel? He’s even gone from being clueless about human nature to expert child psychologist.
3. How does someone go from leading NASA missions to quivering damsel in distress?? It’s like she regressed from being Sarah Connor in terminator 2 to Sarah in T1.
