WHAT IF YOUR FUTURE LIES IN THE PAST?

Dusk is gathering as a young priest, Christopher Fairfax, rides across a silent land.
It's a crime to be out after dark, and Fairfax knows he must arrive at his destination - a remote village in the wilds of Exmoor - before night falls and curfew is imposed.
He's lost and he's becoming anxious as he slowly picks his way across a countryside strewn with the ancient artefacts of a civilisation that seems to have ended in cataclysm.
What Fairfax cannot know is that, in the days and weeks to come, everything he believes in will be tested to destruction, as he uncovers a secret that is as dangerous as it is terrifying ...

'[Harris] takes us on a thrilling ride while serving up serious food for thought.' SUNDAY EXPRESS
'A truly surprising future-history thriller. Fabulous, really.' EVENING STANDARD
'The book's real power lies in its between-the-lines warning that our embrace of the internet represents some kind of sleepwalk into oblivion. It's a provocative, tub-thumping sci-fi of which H. G. Wells might have been proud.' DAILY MAIL
'Harris' latest work intelligently warps historical fiction and tackles issues of religion, science and the apocalypse in the process. As he flexes his imagination, you will be left pondering as often as you are page-turning.' HERALD
'A brilliantly imaginative thriller' READER'S DIGEST

Mind-boggling
A great novel and a great concept. Robert Harris never fails to deliver. A well thought out story. And a very alternative view of the future. I won't say anymore about the novel as i don't want to spoil it for any other readers. However i think you should come to your own conclusions about the story. The actual beginning of the novel threw me bit about the age the story was set in. It was Brilliant. If you have ever read Fatherland by the same author you will love this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed. As you read the pages it all begins to fit together.

Gripping and disturbing...
Britain's best thriller writer has delivered another masterpiece! Without giving away too much of the carefully crafted plot, I need to disagree with several of its previous reviews:
(1) the ending: rather than being 'rushed' or 'sudden' it has been built up superbly and offers an ingenious twist, especially considering the novel's title, which can be interpreted in at least three different ways
(2) the author explains in fact very clearly how society collapsed, and also, why little of its prior knowledge was preserved, as well as the apparent absence of efforts to rebuild its former model
(3) to those still doubtful about the premise I recommend to take a look at medieval history, especially the roughly one thousand years of apparent regression from the collapse of the Western Roman empire to Renaissance
The Second Sleep is a chillingly disturbing novel in unsettling times and a thoroughly gripping read!

Excellent story from a fascinating perspective
Great book with excellent narration. A very interesting look on how an apocalyptic event could reboot the world.

An audible page turner.
This is the first audible book I have ever listened to, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
The story, context and narrator, for me, made this an audible page turner. It is an intriguing story/plot and quite believable too, considering it's fiction.
This was one of my free introductory books when signing up to Audible, but I would have gladly paid for it also.

Excellent story
Well written and full of surprises right until the end. A fantastic way of looking at our world and what could happen in the future, if we don’t sort out the problems which we have. Both myself and my husband were enthralled until the last chapter.

Unfulfilled
Terrific premise, brilliant narration, but it just fizzled out in the end. I'm sure the author would argue that he was leaving the reader to decide what happened next and that our imagining of the next steps are stronger than if he defined them, but I felt short-changed if this is a parable for our times it comes up short, if it's just a great tale it comes up short.
Overall hugely disappointing after a great start.
