Summary

A legend among Vermont cops, Joe Gunther has solved more local whodunits than a whole squad of detectives. But his latest case takes him and his team off their Brattleboro home turf, 42 miles west, to chip-on-its-shoulder, blue-collar Bennington.

On the edge of town, Gunther encounters the lifeless body of Michelle Fisher. Her corpse, pale and seemingly at peace, offers him no clues about who she was or how she died. There are no signs of violence, no disorder. Snapshots and postcards show a woman who laughed hard and lived harder. Yet diaries reveal a rootless life marred by depression and drink. Suicide seems a reasonable conclusion, but Gunther suspects foul play. The house is for sale, after all, and Michelle was its only tenant - one who resisted all efforts to have her evicted. The unsavory landlord is a prime suspect but is safely equipped with an impressively air-tight alibi.

To uncover the truth about the fate of this discarded, all-but-forgotten woman, Gunther must follow a confusing trail of half leads and mounting crimes. He draws near to a violent and careless trio of criminals whose leader is hell-bent on making the career move of a lifetime - and willing to step on anyone who might get in his way.

Enjoyable

The plot was very good, not excellent but enjoyable and although complex it skirted around some difficult talking points that could and should have been taken further but being able to deal corruption and coercion was dealt with.

Good story with a twist at the end you don't see coming. So hooked on this series. Can't wait for the next one.

Dreadful.

I absolutely hated this book! Just dreadful. Glad there was a lot less of whinging Gail, but the 3 bad guys were just awful characters & the story line suicidally depressing. Nothing good happens in this book. Nothing is uplifting and the two story lines running in parallel are just irritating & annoying. I only persevered as I've enjoyed the other books and watching the key characters develop. You won't miss anything by skipping this and that's what I recommend you do. Dreadful.

Interesting Book

I think one of the best so far of the series. It seems to be written with slightly more maturity than the others and some chapters stand out. Mainly the love interest of the story. The rest of the characters sadly don't develop any more.

Enjoyable read

Good story and ending. No politics in this one which I prefer, just a good story.

Much the same

Again, just an easy, inoffensive listen, quite soothing tone actually which can lull me to sleep! Not really the intention. I’m only continuing because I think the series is almost finished! Why do I do that?! Tom Taylorson, excellent as ever. Please, please stop including the pointless, self centred, Gale/Gayle! It adds nothing to the story, I don’t know why they were ever together.

Update, just checked, don’t know why I thought I was near the end there are about a gizilliin books to go! Well, already bought the next, I thought last!
