About this listen

Called to investigate the bloodstained aftermath of an eventful Christmas party, detectives Anderson and Costello discover that the holiday season can be anything but merry.

A family man is stabbed to death at a crowded Christmas Ice Show. Murder in plain sight. No clues, no witnesses, no known motive.

A week later, two bodies are discovered at a holiday cottage in a remote highland glen: one in the kitchen; the other sprawled outside on the icy lawn. The killer would appear to have arrived and left without leaving a trace, not even a footprint in the snow.

What secrets are lurking within this isolated, superstitious community? As the snow piles higher, detectives Anderson and Costello put their wits to solving a seemingly impossible crime and gradually uncover a twisted tale of greed, obsession - and cold-blooded murder.

Too complicated

A good story but too many characters for one narrator. I got very confused as to who was who as many sounded alike. Ok story. Narrator excellent-just too many characters for one.

Great narration

The 'well kent' narrator made this compelling listening and really drove the story forward.

As for the story, it was interesting however it seems that the link between the two murders was very hastily tied up as was the ending of one key character. After so much listening it was a shame. There was also a lot of time spent on overlong padding to set up a scene. The narrator certainly made staying with it easier!

Crime in the snow

I enjoyed this book more than some in the series, partly because of the ‘locked room’ context and the vividly described setting, and plot. I had skipped the last couple because of the narrator, but now we’re back to the excellent James MacPherson, it good to catch up with Anderson & Costello again

Atmospheric listen

I really enjoy Caro Ramsey’s books so just had to have the latest in the Anderson and Costello series. The characters are so well drawn I now feel I know them and might even recognise them in the street. The description of place and the effects of the weather are compelling and I really felt I was there.the plot was complex and the denouement unexpected. I love James MacPherson’s narration he really brought life to it all. As a Scot I appreciate that Audible has different Scottish accents used by the narrators have east coast for some and west coast for others with many more such as highland and islands too. Long may this continue .

A 'one-day' listen

Firstly, I love this narrator. I'm afraid I'm not well enough informed about Scottish regional accents to know how well he performs each, but I find his voice fits my ear perfectly! The Anderson / Costello series has been a slow burn for me. After listening to The Sideman I went back 2 or 3 books and listened again, finding myself much more involved and picked this book up as soon as it came out. You can pick holes in it but I'd prefer not to....the descriptions of the setting I found very evocative, I laughed out loud in a couple of places and even DCI Anderson's extraordinary lack of control in his home life didn't annoy me too much. I started at 9am and listened straight through yet another day of shielding.

Good heavens! Absolutely awful!

I used to enjoy the Caro Ramsey books....... But this one is just one continuous moan everyone is awful, constantly moaning about life, partners, horrible children etc etc. I did restart after I was a but half way through as I thought I was missing something and was starting to lose the will to live! The story just doesn't hang together, and it is just overall unpleasant that I cannot stay with it.
