About this listen

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler, first introduced in The Various Haunts of Men, is on a painting holiday in Venice when he is summoned home by a telephone call. He has family problems to face, and the stress and grind of running a busy police station. When a little boy is snatched as he stands with his satchel at the gate of his home, waiting for his lift to school, an ordinary community realises that terror and evil are in their very midst.

You should listen to Susan Hill's brilliant Simon Serrailler trilogy in the correct order which is as follows:

  • Book 1: The Various Haunts of Men
  • Book 2: The Pure in Heart
  • Book 3: The Risk of Darkness

I became as deeply engaged with this Simon Serrailler book as with the first.
Susan Hill creates complex believable characters. There are no trite fixes to the storyline. Although this works as a stand alone book it is greater for being part of a series & I am planning to get the next one
The narration by Steven Pacey is clear & well differentiated.
A gripping listen

A deep, engaging listen

Really enjoying this series. Loved susan hill as an author for a while but stumbled across these books by accident on a long drive for work. Am smitten!

Excellent

After reading No 1 I felt a bit cheated - who was the acupuncturist writing to? Why and what was the actual point of Freya dying and the introduction of Diana. After No 2 I agree with Cat completely regarding the odd emotions (without reason as far as we know) of 'Si' but find the silly reactions of Diana implausible and unattractive- monied or not. It seems like there are just too many themes going on around an insular and selfish man! Not convinced to move any further with this particular series.

I am not convinced...

I initially downloaded this due to being in love with Stephen Paceys narration, and I’d never heard of the author. Despite some of the medical nonsense in it (I’m a Dr and some of it grated) the story and writing and pace we’re wonderfully judged and such an original direction in a ‘murder mystery’. Although there’s not the typical ‘ta-da’ moment- there’s plenty of red herrings and plot twists and the ending is satisfying and a great set up to the rest of the series- which I shall start on immediately. 😊

Loved it

This is the second book by this author I have bought. I find Susan Hill's books engaging, full of suspense and her character's real.

But I was very disappointed in the amount of foul language in this book, which was absent from the first book. It's especially offensive in an audio book as you can't just skim over it as you can when you are reading. It really puts me off an author. I shall give her third book a try, but if it's more of the same, then I'll abandon this author. A great pity.

Contains strong language

My second Susan Hill book,I nearly did not finish the book due to the disturbing subject of child abduction. It made you think about your own children/grandchildren and I found it quite thought provoking and a what if scenario
I can not recommend it even though I have awarded it four stars and leave it to the reader to decide if that makes sense.

Disturbing

The story seemed real, not flashy or unbelievable. Not to much flowery descriptions of places and people. Just really good listen. Looking forward to the next story in the series. Steven Pacey my favorite story teller. He was the reason I found Susan Hill book's.

Honest and enjoyable

This is my second Simon Serrailler story and I'm thoroughly enjoying these books.
With each new book you get to know and engage with the characters who are complex, and believable.
Really engrossing stories, and although classed as detective mysteries they also explore social decisions, human nature, morals and the trials of everyday life.

As with life not all stories have a happy ending with all the loose ends tied up.

Great narration by Steven Pacey, on to the next one.

Another Author to add to my list
