Summary

She finds the ultimate love of her life in another time...and as a man.

Jessie Wharton is a teacher in the twenty-first century. Or at least she was. Taking her history class to visit the ruins of a historic fort in West Texas, the scorching heat turns her world upside down. Suddenly nothing is the way it is supposed to be. She is no longer Jessie Wharton. She is Jesse Webster. She isn't a teacher. She is a private in the US army, stationed at Fort Callaghan, a completely functional outpost. And it is 1867. Worse, she isn't a she any longer. She is a man. A man who is finding himself falling in love with a fellow soldier named Martin Parrish. Together they discover love in the scorching Texas heat, in a time when the merest breath of homosexuality is enough to have the accused whipped to death...if the native Indians don't scalp them first.

Not enough depth

This is an interesting story. It’s time travel sort of. I can’t say I enjoyed much about this book. It is on me though. This book goes back to a horrible time where people were given lashes for gay actions. It brings reality to the story. The sex is not realistic. It is more written like a MF story. I just felt the story really had no depth.

as good as the ebook

The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, I’m over the half, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Beautiful but sad

I didn't know it would be such a heartbreaking story when I request this audiobook, but I won't hold it against the book, it was my fault.

So, this is a story about a woman who come back in time to a barbaric era, homofobia, lashes, war and everything that time has to offer. And there is two explicit scenes of torture where they receive 50 lashes for committing sodomy. It was harsh to hear, but it gave weight to the story.

As far for the romance, it was pretty fast. The book could have been a little bit longer so the insta-love wound't be to obvious, but it was cute and nice anyway. Their sex encounter... Was so underwhelming. One of the many reasons I tend not to read MF books because I find the sex boring, and that's exacly what happen here. The sex between to men was treated like it was between a man and a woman. They use water (!) for lub, there is no preparation, he just stick his meat into Jess and Jess didn't even felt pain, only bliss. Oh, it was Jess first time.

I'm not gonna spoiled the ending, but it was bittersweet at least.

This is the first time I listened to this narrator. His voice was suiting and calming, but I find he could use more pauses between the words, specially in the transitions between on scene and the other. He did a good job with making different voices for the MCs when it was a woman and a man, when Jess spoke in her mal body, I didn't find difference between her and Martin. Overall, I like it and I would definitely hear more from him.

Very Captivating!

I was intrigued by the Blurb. This is definitely not your usual read. The world building is fabulous and coping with having an MC losing his identity and being transported into a time warp was definitely well handled.
Guy Veryzer did a commendable job on the narration.

Jessie and Martin

It took me a minute to get use to the narrator but once I did, I was swept away into this wonderful time travel romance.

Jessie and Martin’s story is one of love, passion and even heartache, but not all is lost. The ending is a wonderful surprise and I found myself a little teary eyed.

Though Jessie and Martin are two men, Jessie is always referred as “she” when it’s her P.O.V. She’s a woman trapped in a man’s body.

This is the first book I’ve listened to like this, and I really enjoyed it.

I thought Guy Veryzer did a great job with the emotional and dramatic parts, especially at the end. I did have to up the reading speed a bit, but overall Guy Veryzer did a good job.

Definitely different 😉

Well definitely not what I was expecting. We start off with a heterosexual woman, who ends up in the past as a man and finds herself in a gay relationship where it's punishable by death, only to be flung by to the future and open to the possibility of a lesbian relationship.
It's still a lovely story about that love is love no matter the packaging or even time but I kinda like my stories wrapped up with a bow and depending on how you interpret the open ending, it can go either way. That's why only 4 stars. I need a cherry on top please.

Meh...

I love the concept...I think a little more thought and effort would have made this a great story. I wouldn't call it time travel or reincarnation...but I can dig the concept.
One thing that would have made this more enjoyable to me would be a different narrator. I know that narrating isn't the easiest job...but I am not a fan of Guy Veryzer. He is very monotone to me. And the cadence of his voice. I can only handle his narrations if I have other things to do.

Could not finish audible

The storyline was good and narrator did an awesome job but what turn me off was I felt I reading about a trans which I do not believe in. Now if somewhere in the beginning after Jessie the female learn she is a man in her trip back in time I would have finished it but it did not happen and the story continues with women identity.

An imaginative concept

The narration by Guy Veryzer kept me engaged in a story that was imaginative, with good pacing and enough personality to distinguish the characters. Overall, though, the story could not overcome the glaring chasm midway through when the two central characters declared their love to one another after having had barely any interactions over two days. If they had gone through traumatic events together, or anything more substantive beyond naked lust, the story might have been saved. Alas, it was not to be, and after the "I love you's" were thrown about, it was hard not to categorize this as just another hastily thrown together forced romance.

so loved this story I find it interesting to hear stories about reincarnation I find them fascinating and to come back as the opposite sex and still remember your previous life this was an interesting take on an MM love story and I thought it was great.

DNF

I’m sorry but I could not finish this story, while the plot seems compelling, I can’t get past the narration. The story is about characters in the 20s/30s and he sounds at best in his 60s.

I think this would be a great book to read, but I just couldn’t listen to it.

I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Surprisingly good!

4 Blue Roses
3.5 Blue Flames

This audiobook was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
O my goodness! was I surprised by this short story. It was such a treat. I am not a fan of this narrator, but as I pushed ahead and told myself to calm down, not everyone can be a favourite. The plot was so well done, my hanging on became less of a chore and more a satisfying endeavour. There are two reasons I am not a fan of this narrator. One; his extremely slow reading, but I remedied that by listening at 1.5 speed. Two; he sounds older to me. The characters appear to be late 20 early 30's, but their voices sounds 50 may 60 years old.

I love time travel romances. This was done quite well. I definitely recommend this audiobook for LGBT Fiction lovers. It is on the short side, but is worth a credit. I was pulled into the world of 200 years past and found myself emotionally agitated and almost murderous with frustration with the homophobic bastards flogging Martin to death.

The HEA was also a nice surprise, I honestly did not see it coming until the end.
Happy Listening.
