Summary

Driven from his family when his sexuality is exposed, Jonah discovers drama, passion and intrigue in a traveling carnival - and in the enigmatic owner, Rafe Grimstone. The preacher's son and the lord who's rejected his former life in England feel the heat of attraction from the moment they meet.

Open-hearted Jonah is willing to risk hellfire and damnation for brief moments of pleasure with Rafe, but the older man is frozen in a past he can't escape, no matter how far he runs. As Rafe struggles to choose between responsibilities of his present and his past, mysterious accidents assail the close-knit carnival community. Will the perpetrator be revealed before the traveling show is ruined? And will Rafe finally reveal his true self to Jonah or continue to mask his identity like the changing images in a house of mirrors?

Amazing Narration

Gary Furlong did a stunning job here voicing a whole bloomin' carnival troupe. The story was great and of the standard and historical detail I've come to expect from Bonnie Dee and Summer Devon. Excellent entertainment!

Difficult times for gay men

Touching story of hateful family's and getting away from them and making a better life for himself and finding the love he craved, not an easy road but he found it in the end. A Touching story of happiness and some sadness well written and narrated.

Dull

I doubted for a long time if it was the monotone narrator who made the story dull. But in the end it did not matter. Two stars for the story, because the prose was clumsy when describing love and romance. As if a 14 year old girl tried her hand at poetry.

Gary Furlong delivers a supreme performance in this turn of the century American historical!! 👏👏👏

What a UNIQUE story!! ❤️❤️This historical set at the turn of the century plunks you in the midst of a traveling carnaval troupe.

A beaten young man, Jonah, is taken in by the carnaval’s mysterious owner, Rafe. Yes, the two end up together, but it’s a rough road to an HEA with a lot of pulling away on Rafe’s part.

What I loved most about this story was the setting and how well the secondary characters were integrated into the story. They helped to create an fantastic mood and each and everyone of them was interesting!

There is a mystery here—one that sabotages the traveling show and their financial prospects. Another muster is Rafe and his cloudy background, which he refuses to share with Jonah.

I also loved how bossy Jonah was sexually with his “boss.” And despite the religious sounding title, the preacher’s son does NOT angst over his sexuality for more than a few scenes at the beginning of the story.

The HEA is rather odd, but this was an odd cast of characters, so it fits!

I listened to this and I have to admit that Gary Furlong deserves a standing ovation for the myriad of dialects and voices he mastered as well as for an amazing performance!! 👏👏👏

Absolutely amazing

I didn't know what I was getting into when I picked up this title. It has everything you would want in a story, excellent characters, amazing dialouge, character development, and an amazing story. I love this book, and the narrator did the book so much justice. Made the experience so much better.

Uninteresting

It is not what I expected, interesting though. Sorry. I am not good at rating stories.

Pretty good

Better than average historical MM romance. Some of the language was anachronistic but otherwise it was pretty well done. Not too many sex scenes, which often become boring and repetitive, and thankfully the era prevented the tedious trope of the inevitable wedding at the end!

Loved this!

When I read the blurb for this book I was immediately interested. I love romance books, carnival books, and books that have a little added mystery to them. This book had it all. Tie in that it's M/M and I couldn't have asked for a better listen. The relationship between Jonah and Rafe was sweet and hot and i was routing for them the entire time. I also loved all of the secondary characters. I was drawn in pretty fast and the writing kept me there. This was the first time I have listened to the narrator and the first time I've read these authors and was pleasantly surprised I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'd definitely listen to this narrator again as well as the authors.

Wonderful love story!

This is a wonderful story of finding love, friendship, and acceptance in a traveling carnival in the early 1900's. Jonah is a small town preacher's son, and he has been kicked out of his home and beaten for the "perversion" of being attracted to another man. Rafe is the owner and leader of the carnival where Jonah takes refuge, and he has his own secret past and reasons for trying to escape. The two men are instantly attracted, and they quickly begin changing each other's lives for the better.
I found this story thoroughly entrancing. Jonah, Rafe, and the other carnival workers, are all brialliantly brought to life, through both the authors' words and the fantastic narration. There were moments that brought me to tears, and there were times I smiled happily. I enjoyed this world and the people who inhabited it. Jonah and Rafe stole a piece of my heart.
I was provided a copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

The story is as good as the title & cover are not

Pleasantly surprised by this one, especially since it's included in Audible plus selection without additional charges. You can never tell with these kinds of m/m covers and smutty titles, it can be anything from complete trash to hidden gem. I would say it's quite nice this time. For what it is, it managed to accomplish quite a bit.
Okay, this cover is not the worst out there, I have seen mush worse but it does not encourage to expect great things. It does encourage to expect some sex scenes, though. Sure, there is plenty of smut in this book, and it starts pretty early. It's not bad smut, period accurate vocabulary and all, nothing against it. I did not care much for it though? Because that's not what made the entire book good for me. It was the well crafted detailed carnival life descriptions, the plot, the decent range of interesting secondary characters and realistic relationships within the traveling troupe. It all was balanced so much better than I would have expected. Also, interesting backgrounds of the two main characters that made sense with their bahavior. A bit underwhelming from the romance standpoint was how instantly after meeting the two main characters began their intimate relationship. And the fact that they had to hide it resulted in less opportunities to develop it. That took away from my interest in their sex scenes, but it does depict the harsh realities of gay relationships of the time period the story is set in really well, and as people they were still interesting.
The narrator did an amazing job reading it. First time listening to his voice, and it was a great experience. Bought another book he narrated.
