About this listen
1688: Beth Ambrose has led a sheltered life within Merryfields, her family home on the outskirts of London; a place where her parents provide a sanctuary for melancholic souls.
A passionate and gifted artist, Beth shares a close bond with Johannes the painter, who nurtures her talents and takes her on as his apprentice.
But as political tensions begin to rise in the capital, Noah Leyton arrives at her family home in the middle of the night with a proposition that turns Beth's world upside down. And when Merryfields becomes refuge to a mysterious new guest, whose connections provide an opportunity for Beth to fulfill her artistic ambitions, it soon becomes clear that it comes at a price....

Wonderful!!!!
The Apothecary’s Daughter and the sequel, The Painter’s Apprentice, are wonderful novels filled with adventure, suspense and romance all interwoven into English history! Anne Dover’s narration make the stories so vivid and delightful, I was totally transported and will miss all of the characters now that I have finished listening to both books. I look forward to listening to or reading more of Charlotte Betts’ novels! Charlotte Betts, please write a third novel about Beth’s adventures in Virginia and her hypothetical daughter! Highly recommend both books!

Enjoyable story
Didn't realise this was a follow on from the Apothecary's daughter. I had forgotten some of the characters from that book as I read it a while ago, but soon caught up. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first but it was nicely read and a pleasant enough story.

Easy listen
I had to spend quite a few days in hospital recently and spent some of the time listening to this book. It is not the best book of Charlotte Betts that I have read, nevertheless, it was an easy listen and well researched. I'm sure that a small extra push would make Betts' historical novels come to life. However, it's not quite there yet but it's entertaining and easy to digest.

Rather boring ——couldn’t face more than 20 chapters.
This seems to part of a trilogy about a dysfunctional family.
It is repetitive and really hard work to get through.
Someone might like it, but I was disappointed.

became good over 3/4 of the way through book.
Any additional comments?
this was a book I wasn't in a hurry to get back to. it got bogged down in the romance between beth and noah whether each loved the other. it was repetitive.
the historical parts were really good.
as with the previous books after the end of the story there was the information about who was real and who was fiction. what happened to the monarchy which was interesting.
anne dover performed the book well bringing the characters to life.
