When you’re the editor of a successful investigative journal, you don’t dash around Scotland chasing after loch monsters. But Gill McArdle didn’t believe in unicorns either, and speaking honestly, he was fortunate to walk away from that one.

He’s a scientist, and not one of the wild-eyed optimists spending their days, scanning the loch for a creature. And here’s his problem. With every passing hour, evidence mounts that something is stirring. Far to the north, an unusual animal carcass is discovered in Caithness. In the west, the disappearance of a fishing boat remains unexplained. And as Gill follows the data, his investigations lead him, reluctantly, to the banks of Loch Ness. Still skeptical about the increasing sightings below Urquhart Castle, he reopens an old archaeological site in his search for answers. In a crushing realization, he is forced to admit that danger lurks in the Great Glen’s deepest waters.

If I shouted it’s a loch not a lock once I must have shouted/thought it a thousand times. For a Scottish story, based on Scottish myth, and set on the banks of Scotland’s most famous loch you’d think they could get the pronunciation right. I don’t know if Stewart Crank is actually Scottish. Most of the time his accent sounded fairly genuine. But it’s loch not lock! It’s so basic, so fundamental, and so lazy not to make the effort. It nearly ruined the book for me. The plot is great, lots of twists and turns, the characters are super. But it’s loch!
I would also suggest that Tormod Cockburn leaves his blatant Unionist propaganda out of future novels. Had his jibe about a United Kingdom been any less cheesy (it was so obvious it made me laugh out loud) or if it had occurred earlier in the book I would probably not have finished it, Perhaps as a pro Unionist Mr Cockburn is okay with Crank’s abysmal pronunciation of the Scots word loch but most Scottish readers will find it as jarring as I did.

It’s a loch not a lock! Loch!
