Summary

A body discovered by the rocks. A broken detective returns to a scene of past tragedy. Will the pain of the past prevent him from seeing the present?

Detective Inspector Macleod returns to his island home 20 years after the painful loss of his wife. With a disposition forged in strong religious conservatism, he must bond with his new partner, the free spirited and upcoming female star of the force, to seek the killer of a young woman and shine a light on the evil beneath the surface. To do so, he must once again stand in the place where he lost everything. Only at the water’s edge will everything be made new.

The rising tide brings all things to the surface.

Gorgeous start for a new series

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. John McNab is a great reader. Please do write quickly the sequel. I am looking forward to a new adventure of these two, so different one from the other and so perfect a team together.

Highly recommend

I loved this book and sorry that it is finished. I can't praise every aspect of this book enough. The story, the characters and the narrator were the best. The story is different from anything I have heard before. I have read over 800 detective thrillers and this one is in my top 5. Well worth a credit.

A new Scottish writer to me - excited

A good solid 4 stars all round for me. Brought back memories of what Scotland was like on a Sunday when you were frowned upon for hanging your washing out on the Sabbath. A different slant on a detective inspector with a past and who takes solace in religion even though religion was part of the cause of his grief. His past has left him damaged but he starts to come back to life when he is newly partnered by a young police woman. Interesting start to a new series. I hope he continues to publish on Audible because I definitely would listen to the next one.

Review Water's edge

Extreme bad narrator. Sounds like he is trying to mimic an accent he cannot master which make it sounds as if every character is from some east European country.

Awful!

I tried to listen to the end but could not. The main detective veers between being a religious maniac and a pervert. The police are assaulted ridiculously often. The story is poor. Don't bother!

The main characters were awful

Really? A religious DCI with a raunchy side kick? And the fact that he kept either inadvertently touching her or couldn’t keep his eyes off her was ridiculous and took up most of the story. I really struggled to get to the end. Won’t be reading any more from this author. Sorry, but it was awful.

Really dreadful

Wooden narration, a central character who seems to live in the 1930s - the whole religious thing is merely an excuse to reiterated tired, sexist cliches.
