About this listen

An impossible murder behind a locked door. Can DCI Oldroyd find the key to the mystery?

Lord Redmire’s gambling habit has placed him in serious debt. Determined to salvage his fortune by putting Redmire Hall on the map, the aristocrat performs an impossible locked-door illusion on live TV. But as the cameras roll, his spectacular trick goes fatally wrong....

Special guest DCI Jim Oldroyd has a front-row seat, but in all his years with the West Riding Police he’s never witnessed anything like this. He sees Redmire disappear—and then reappear, dead, with a knife in his back.

As Oldroyd and DS Stephanie Johnson soon discover, nearly everyone at the event had a reason to resent the eccentric lord. But how did the murderer get into the locked room—or out, for that matter?

When the only other person who knew the secret behind the illusion is brutally silenced, the case begins to look unsolvable. Because as Oldroyd and Johnson know, it’s not just a question of who did it and why—but how?

And so continues my binge listen of this series - it is so good and just wraps me up in a nice warm glow. It is a no nonsense police procedural with such a hint of Agatha Christie. There seems to be so much love for the area by the author and the descriptions are making me want to visit the area.

Cosy police procedural and works well

An enjoyable book, very well performed. Kept me guessing until the end. A typically English murder mystery with well written characters.

Entertaining

As always well written with an intriguing plot. I started this series at book 5, and enjoying ging back to beginning to read from book one.

I thoroughly enjoy this series by J.R. Ellis. The novels are well plotted, and, even though some of the smaller characters are stereotypes, I feel invested in the more rounded character of our protagonist and his family life. Very good reading by Michael Page.

Magical!

I enjoyed this episode in the Yorkshire Murders series.

The story had a number of twists and turns keeping me guessing until the end of the story.

In the previous episodes I found the narrator to be annoying. In this episode he was good. He made each character believable.

A Good Listen

Love this series, disturbing sub plot introduced with this one that I'm looking forward to hearing about in the next book involving one of the main characters. This always proves to me that a good writer can engage my emotions in the story, making me want to listen to the next one immediately!

Easy listen with a great plot

As I started this, the third in the Yorkshire Murders, I was expecting a good read with engaging characters and twist in the tail. I was not disappointed in the slightest. The main characters are fun and interesting and as usual, J R Ellis sprinkled enough twists and turns to make this a more than decent read. The narrator, Michael Page, has entertained me on all of the Yorkshire Murders, and many other books, a great choice.

Good Yorkshire Mystery
