About this listen

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Nowhere near as good as other Joy Ellis nooks. The narration is so annoying it puts you off.

Disappointed the narration ruins the story

The narrator is poor and doesn’t help the story, which is disappointing and clumsy in places.

Not up to Jackman/Evans series

I had been looking forward to starting the Nicky Galina series, but so disappointed with this first book. Much as I’m sure the narrator is a lovely person the narration ruined the book for me. The accents were dire, particularly the males, and Joseph was made to sound like an automaton rather than the dashing ex SAS soldier he clearly was. The narrator was whiny, ponderous and didn’t seem to have done much research into what a Fenland accent might be. Richard Armitage had done such a fantastic job with the Jackman series that it just highlighted how bad this was. I won’t be wasting any credits on future books.

Such a shame!

The storyline was ok but didn't really generate any tension or suspense. The narrator couldn't maintain a consistent accent - it sounded like a parody of a northern accent done by a school child. I found myself laughing at the overflat vowels. Joseph sounded so stiff and unrealistic it was laughable. Probably won't listen to the rest of the series as I was too distracted by the terrible accents of the narrator.

I have listened to a lot of audio books and never had to say the narrator was bad - until now. Please re-record with a narrator who understands intonation and colloquial phraseology. I don’t even care about the lack of ‘correct’ accent but the flicking between long and short vowels is soo irritating. Good potentials series but dump the narrator.

The narrator needs to go

What a shame! I nearly gave up on the listening but persevered through to the end trying to ignore the narrator that couldn't do a successful accent let alone keep it up. Unfortunately I won't be wasting credits on any other book in this series for that reason.

Good story ruined by narration

I am such a fan of the author but the truly terrible narration, the spectacularly awful (almost laughable) accents mean I won't be listening to any of the other books in the series.

Great story, AWFUL narration

I think this may well be worth a listen but not with this narrator. Lasted an hour then got bored!

Good book ruined by poor narration

The narration was like an auto-generated voice. it was difficult to tell the characters apart.

couldn't finish
