About this listen

A man lies dying in a hospital in upstate Vermont. The nurses know only that he is an academic at a nearby university, but they have been instructed to call the FBI should anyone visit their patient.

News of this suspected Russian illegal soon reaches MI5, where Liz Carlyle has been contacted by Mischa, a top secret source who is requesting a clandestine rendezvous in Berlin.

Meanwhile in Brussels a Russian agent who has lived undercover for years is beginning to question his role, while suspicions have been roused about a Suffolk boarding school that has recently changed hands in mysterious circumstances....

Believable and compelling

A compelling and enjoyable story. The narrator was able to give each character their own voice to such an extent that t at times it seemed as though there could have been several people reading the story. I will definitely search for more books in this series. A really absorbing listen.

Very slow narration

I loved this book but found the narration painfully slow, I'm sure it could have been finished in 6 hours rather than 10hours! Love Stella Rimington books, but perhaps I'll stick to reading them.

Pleasant enough but was hoping for more thrill

Easy listen, interesting plot but lacking in drama. First one I've listened to by this author

Each book in this series improves.

This series of Liz Carlyle, MI5 agen, with British Intelligence just keeps getting better.

There are some parts which date this book a little and the author follows a regular format of building up the plot in the first half of the book then solving the plot in the 2nd.

This book is much busier, in terms of characters, than previous books, but the plot also brings together many of the characters from previous books in the series.

There is plenty of scope to expand this series further, and for a few divergent options looking to the future..

Stella Remington was a former Director General of M15 and I believe that makes these stories all the more believable. I strongly believe that an author should concerntrate on what they know about and I believe that shows in each book.

what makes this audiobook so much better is that Stella writes about what she knows about, and her writing skills are improving all along.

Whilst I believe there should be another book in this aeries, I also think that Stella should also start a new series of books. Otherwise she will only be known as a spy fiction author. She clearly has so much talent as an author that this would expand her repertoir and keep her relevant.

Whilst I didn't like the change in narrator in previous episodes of this aeries, Julia Barrie has made this book stand out. Her skills have also expanded. Especially in dealing with so many characters. The one thing which still needs more work is the accents for the foreign characters.
.

This audiobook is definitely well worth listening too.

Narrated brilliantly. Climax of Storyline disappointed

Brilliantly narrated - enjoyed all the different character narrations. Story built up intrigue but was difficult to follow at times with bouncing around of different locations / people. Then the conclusions quickly came without any real major developments or surprises which disappointed. There was no real ending as such or reason to the plot. Overall though enjoyed it but just came away feeling ending was really rushed

Contemporary storyline

Manchester accent was a bit poor but otherwise a great story that could be a real life headline in todays newspapers
