Story
1228 A.D. - After a vicious battle with old adversaries that sees his father killed, Sir Dennis d’Vant finds himself the head of the House of d’Vant. A house descended from the kings of Cornwall, they are a proud but warring people. Their most hated enemy is their neighbor to the north, the rich and cunning Earl of Cornwall. Dennis, however, is not like his forefathers; a giant of a man and a skilled warrior, he is also quiet and gentle. He does not possess the same fiery instincts of his family and for that, he is often looked upon as weak.

1200 AD - In the time following the death of Richard the Lionheart and the ascension of his brother, John, to the throne of England, a plot against the new king is hatched from an unexpected place - deep within the bowels of The Lateran Palace in Rome. It is rumored that the Pope himself is behind it. It is a plot so dark, and so dastardly, that William Marshal needs men who specialize in dark and dirty games in order to save a king they all hate, yet a king that England desperately needs.

Summary
National best selling author Barb Hendee presents a dark, fascinating new world and the story of two sisters who will discover they have far more power than they ever envisioned....
In a small village in the nation of Droevinka, orphaned sisters Cline and Amelie Fawe scrape out a living selling herbal medicines in their apothecary shop. Cline earns additional money by posing as a seer and pretending to read people's futures. But they exist in a land of great noble houses, all vying for power, and when the sisters refuse the orders of a warlord prince, they must flee and are forced to depend on the warlord prince's brother, Anton, for a temporary haven. A series of bizarre deaths of pretty young girls is plaguing the village surrounding Prince Anton's castle. He offers Cline and Amelie permanent protection if they can use their "skills" to find the killer. With little choice, the sisters enter a world unknown to them - of fine gowns and banquets and advances from powerful men. Their survival depends on catching a murderer who appears to walk through walls and vanish without a trace - and the danger grows with each passing night.

A really good read...
Where does The Mist-Torn Witches rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I normally don't write reviews, but someone else had wrote a really negative review, and after listening to the first two books in this series, I felt as though the negativity definitely wasn't warranted. Barb Hendee writes great fiction and I've loved her other series, so I was disappointed when I read the negative review and almost didn't bother to listen to this series. I am glad I chose to have faith in Hendee's writing instead of trusting the review.
Who was your favorite character and why?
All of the characters are well rounded and interesting. The female characters are young, but have matured nicely from the first book. They are more confident and skilled with their powers and definitely hold their own in the book.
Which scene was your favorite?
I love the tension and building passion between the female and male characters in the book
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I finished the first and second books in two days, which speaks to how well the narrator holds your interest. She has a very pleasant voice that doesn't grate or overwhelm the story. I am a devoted reader, and can finish a novel in written form very quickly, so when I listen to an audio book, I want to forget that someone else is reading the story to me. I want their voice to fade into the background and the story to hold all of my attention. There's nothing worse than a narrator who uses poor accents or tries to make every single character have a weird, annoying voice. Subtle changes in tone accomplish much the same thing, and the narrator for this book does a great job telling the story without trying to make her reading the star of the show.
Any additional comments?
If you are looking for a deep, spiritual book, this isn't it. If that's what you want, go read Homer. If you are looking for fun fantasy fiction with a bit of mystery and romance thrown in, Hendee always delivers.

Subjectively Boring
I know there's a problem when I bookmark my last listening spot so I can go to the last 15 minutes or so and hear the end to decide whether I even want to listen to the whole book or not. The earlier in the book I do this the higher the chance I won't listen to the whole book. If I don't stop at all I know it was a great book.
I stopped at Chapter 10 here. Yes, I did go back to listen to the rest but only while I was doing other things that split my attention. Judgment.....you might really enjoy this book. The narrator was fabulous and the story could be your style but it wasn't mine.
Back to space opera for awhile. The paranormal mystery didn't have enough excitement for me.

GOOD! WELL WRITTEN AND PERFORMED
I am glad that I decided to give this series a try. I was not disappointed at all. The plot was good and the story was interesting with magic, princes and witches thrown in. The dialogue flows smoothly with Emily Beresford narration. Action was on-going and I was kept interested right to the end. I have downloaded the next two books . Barb Hendee writes very well and I hope there will more on this series coming up soon.

Trite and disappointing
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Every worn-out cliche of "sword & sorcery" fantasy - boring.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Nothing from this author - there are a lot better ones out there
Have you listened to any of Emily Beresford’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
no
