About this listen
A book about finding home in a strange new place, and finding yourself when your life is a mess. The hotly anticipated second novel by the Sunday Times bestselling author of Mother Mother.
I'm a Londoner now. I'm a voice in the noise. I'm ready.
It's the turn of the millennium and, landing in London with nothing but her CD collection and demo tape, Orla Quinn moves into a squalid Kilburn house with her best mate and a band called Shiva.
Orla wants to make music, but juggling two jobs and partying every night isn't helping. Back in Ireland her parents' marriage has crumbled, she's not speaking to her father, and her mother and sister are drinking too much.
While Orla's own dreams seem to be going nowhere, Shiva are on the brink of something big. But as the hype around the band intensifies, so does the hedonism, and relationships in the house are growing strained. This is the story of a young woman thrashing through life, trying to find home in a strange new place. It's also a story about music: how it can break you down and build you back up again, and how to find your rhythm when all you hear is noise.

"I really liked the book. I loved the pace of it, it belts along but never feels rushed. The writing is so vivid - I could almost feel Orla's hangover, and everyone else's too. [Macmanus has] created a great gang of characters, and a great variety too, all of them very human... All the music in the novel is cleverly and very successfully achieved. And London - what [she's] managed to do with London, and what London means to different generations of Irish people - is terrific, and deeply moving." (Roddy Doyle)
"Just finished [The Mess We're In] and I'm so sad it's over. I could have read another sixty chapters about Orla's life, Fahy's pub and her family... A fantastic read." (Joanne McNally)
"Such a gorgeous book... I absolutely ate up every word... It has been so long since a book has stopped me from, not just checking my phone, but actively made me want to put my phone to the side and focus completely on the story. I loved Orla, I can see the TV show or the movie already. I loved the world - oh my God was it nostalgic about moving to London... It's just so grounded in someone who knows the world and place they're talking about and it just fully comes through... It's just done so brilliantly and needless to say at the end I cried... I loved this book." (Aisling Bea)

Left me wanting a follow up. I know these people now and I care.

Finding home in the people and places you choose
There is a gentleness to her writing even on harsh and traumatic topics. She treats her characters carefully. I wish there had been a little more development of the band characters, or perhaps that didn't come through in the narration. There were glimpses of complex characters through the shallow lens they were portrayed through and I'd have loved a glance through a different perspective.

We want more Annie. We need more stories like this
I loved everything about this story, so much so that I must buy a hard copy or at least give it another listen again. I was so rapturously engrossed by almost all of the impressive wording as well!
The way it was narrated made the characters really come to life and massively helped make me picture the scenes too.
Amazing book, in fact it is truly an amazingly spectacular story

Absolutely brilliant
Orlaith was so relatable to me, I walked the same path at the same time late 90s early 00s, couldn't wait to get out of Ireland, find out what was out there in the world, find my place in it. The parties, the madness, the hope & possibilities at that age, but also that time in history, it felt so energetic and dynamic.
Now, in my early 40s, the relationship between her & her Dad really struck a cord with me & the relationship with my daughter and that close Daddy daughter bond.
It is a beautiful book in so many ways, but it also doesn't shy away from the darkness & pain that accompanies us through life.
Couldn't recommend it enough

Genuinely impressed
an incredible writer, similar to Jk in that she describes scenes and people in such a way that you can truly imagine them, while connecting with their self discovery

the story is set in a very small time frame
the story never really seems to start, it is notbterrible but is quite laborious in that not much happens except detail explanations of drug taking and drinking

Not as good as I’d hoped.
I love Annie’s style of writing, I love her narration of the book but sadly the story just didn’t gel with me. The last third of the book was much better than the rest but there was nothing to get your teeth into. I felt that some of the characters were great and would loved to have heard more of their back stories. As another reviewer noted…listening about a band taking drugs is boring to listen to. Include it a little to add to the situations but I was rolling my eyes at every mention of it by the time I was half way through and had to listen to it on a faster playback to get through it.
I absolutely loved Mother Mother and look forward to book 3 with interest.
