Summary
Rescuing the reputation of her 18th-century local highwayman means Poppy Summers must make a stand against her community - and deliver the truth....
Poppy Summers is packing her suitcase to spend a two-week holiday back in her seaside hometown of Port Starr.
However, when she returns, her parents inform her they have decided to take that year-long trip around the world they always dreamed of and they plan to sell their ailing holiday cottage business, which has been in the family for years.
Poppy is horrified and insists she will resign from her job and give up her rented flat in London, in order to take over the holiday cottages and revamp the business. If she hasn’t made it viable within a year, then she tells her father he can sell it.
While Poppy is busy getting her new business, which she names Bluebird Cottages, off the ground, a handsome stranger arrives in the seaside town. He is Mason Cooper, an Australian author and historian, fascinated by the local legend of the Scarlet Highwayman.
Their friendship blossoms, and as they work to discover the truth about the Scarlet Highwayman, they find that their relationship is becoming something more - but can Poppy allow herself to trust again?

A charming and really enjoyable book.
I loved this book!
This was my first ever audiobook and I wasn't sure how I would take to listening to a story instead of actually reading it. I needn't have worried because, within a few minutes, I was immersed within this tale of a dashing highwayman.
I was right to choose this book as my introduction to audiobooks because it was a beautifully descriptive novel that transported me to both a modern day Scottish seaside town and also back to the 18th Century. I felt as though I was there during both periods thanks to the details the author wrote so well. Her characterisation was spot on too with Katie being my favourite character.
The book included a believable love story and I was impressed by the historical research that had been done to aid this. I never like it if an author gets their facts wrong and, in this book, there was none of that. So, another plus point.
I listened to this mostly when I was out walking and it made the time pass so quickly in a most enjoyable way. The narrator was excellent too and she mastered all the various voices so well.
So, all in all, a wonderful book that was a pleasure to listen to.

Awful
A thin story padded out with ridiculously ornate language. Every noun does NOT need two adjectives and the descriptive passages would have shamed a school essay
