Summary
Deciphering an ancient alchemy book is more difficult than Zoe Faust bargained for. She'd much rather be gardening and exploring her new hometown of Portland, Oregon - but time is running out for living gargoyle Dorian Robert-Houdin. If Zoe isn't able to unlock an unusual alchemy book's secrets soon, the French gargoyle will remain awake but trapped in stone forever.
When Zoe gives herself a rare night out to attend a classic magic show, she realizes the stage magicians are much more than they seem. A murder at the theater leads back to a string of unsolved robberies and murders in Portland's past - and a mystery far more personal than Zoe and Dorian ever imagined.

I read some other reviews before moving on to this book to decide if I needed to know more. So was ready to be a bit disappointed after reading this book was “worth getting through to get to book 3”, am pleased to say however, I don’t agree, I enjoyed it & am now moving on to book 3. Redundancy Abounds!!!
Each of the three books offers an interesting story BUT the repetition of back story, to do lists, possible repercussions, her thoughts, age, etc. are sooo annoying. In a series, it is necessary to cover some of the same ground, but this author goes beyond bringing us up to speed. Does she have no faith that her readers can remember what was said on the previous page or in even the previous paragraph? By the third book, I was commenting - out loud - that I didn't need to hear EVERY aspect of the story AGAIN and again. I'm not sure I'll finish the third book because I'm tired of hearing the same thing over and over while making so little progress forward in the actual story. The book could be half or even a third as long if properly edited.

Garbage
If you liked the first book in this series then you should just quit while you're ahead. This one is bad. Really bad. Bad story, bad writing, bad everything. The plot is disjointed and it never comes together. I think the author must have been making it up as she went along. The actual story could have been told in about a third of the time, and the rest is just the author repeating the same details over and over again. I fast forwarded through the last 10 chapters and was still disappointed at how slow the story moved. I would give the story zero stars if I could. It's read well though...so that's something I guess.

Interesting Premise, but enough with Vegan thing
Any additional comments?
I think the premise of both books is quite good, but I am NOT interested in hearing about her Vegan beliefs if I am reading a mystery. Performance comes across as "holier-than-thou", which is part writer's fault and part narrator. Would I read a third book? Good question, I probably would, because they are obviously going to France to save Dorian, but PLEASE, you've made your point about the Vegan lifestyle. Both books would be novellas (but very good novellas) without the New Age / Vegan propaganda. Yes, I do eat veggies - on the side, with a steak!

Sophomore Slump, but Enjoyable if you liked first
Would you listen to The Masquerading Magician again? Why?
Probably not. It lacked that sense of wonder and awe I got from the world and character building of the first book. The best parts of this one were when the world building continued, but too much of the story got hung up on what turned out to be a time consuming plot with little pay-off.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Discovering more about the main characters backstories was definitely the best part.
What does Julia Motyka bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Julia does voices really well.
Any additional comments?
It was a noticeable step down from the first book, but the ending still has me excited about the next one.

What happened to Gigi here?
I've read/listened to several of Gigi Pandian's books. This one, however, was sluggish, with so much repetition of the facts, that it was boring and I listened to several other books before going back to regretfully finishing it. It's disturbing that a female major character is so whiny, depressed, insecure and with such a lack of personal pride as to live the way she does. Please give this character a lift at some point (when does Anything good happen to her?).

Stupid Stupid Vegan Protagonist
Couldn't take much more of the main character making such stupid decisions. And it's obvious the author is an extreme vegan - trying to make us all believe we all should be Vegan - if that were true, vegans wouldn't need to take supplements .
If the story were better , I could have overlooked this.
