Gave up after 7 hours
I really wanted to love this. But kept drifting off into daydreaming while listening. There was nit enough velcro in the story line to keep me paying attention. I saw all the positive reviews so kept persevering for 7 hours before giving myself permission to give up. I'm baffled at the good reviews. I wonder if it was authored and read by Tom Hanks would people speak so highly of it. I rarely leave a mediocre review but this book just went over my head. Perhaps it's more suitable for those in the know familiar with movie sets.

Chaotic Mess
A cool concept, but poorly realised and in desperate need of a better edit. Far too many characters, most of whom you simply don’t care about, repetitive and laden with unnecessary detail and minutiae which you think is distracting you from the plot until you realise there isn’t really any plot. But it’s also not driven by the characters. So, what is this book? Kind of nothing.

Not only can the bloke act rings around most others, he can write an engaging novel, and make listening to it a pleasure.

A great listen
Didn’t know what to expect ( could a very talented actor write a good novel?) but found the story, characters and delivery engaging. And learned a bit about movie making too!

Utterly loved it
I was sure what to expect and, tbh, although I’d liked Uncommon Type: Some stories I hadn’t loved it.
This book though was the audio equivalent of unputdownable. I’m fascinated by the creative process, and film-making is as big as it gets.
The story that Tom Hanks knits together is detailed but never boring. And there are a couple of rags to riches elements, and who’s not going to like that?
I like the wrap-up at the end too. Neat.
I did spend a fair bit of it thinking, ‘I wonder who that character is based on?’, but that probably says more about me than TH.
Loved it. Highly recommend.

Over explained, a bit boring
I’m about halfway through this I really don’t think I’ll get to the end, it’s pretty boring, the only good thing about it is Tom Hanks’ voice narrating it.
However every little thing is explained to the nth degree and you start to doze off and forget the plot. Yeah in fact it’s going in the bin, had enough of it!

A thoughtful, intelligent, insightful and fascinating work. Brilliantly observed and performed as you would expect by a stellar cast.

Did you expect anything less from Tom Hanks?
Absolutely loved it. Just listening to his voice reminds me why he is my favourite actor of all time. Warm, funny, intelligent…
I just hope this is not the last book he writes because I can’t wait to see/listen to everything he produces.
Go ahead and treat yourself with this masterpiece! You won’t regret it!

Exceptional
The story is pure gold. The characters are wonderful. And the slightly unconventional narrative structure is interesting and intriguing without being off putting. If you’re ever liked a movie, you’ll probably enjoy this book.
All the voice actors are great, but Mr. Hanks is Oscar-worthy. If Oscars were for audio books. Which they aren’t.
