Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A wildly ambitious story of the making of a colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film, and the humble comic book that inspired it all.

Spanning 80 years of a changing America and culminating in the opening of the film, we meet a colourful cast of characters including a troubled soldier returning from war, a young boy with an artistic gift, an inspired and eccentric director, a pompous film star on the rise, a tireless production assistant and countless film crew members that together create Hollywood magic.

Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece offers an insider's take on the momentous efforts it takes to make a film. At once a reflection on America's past and present, on the world of show business and the real world we all live in.

This audiobook features 15 narrators, including Rita Wilson, other character backstories performed by Peter Gerety (Charlie Wilson's War, The Wire), Natalie Morales (Dead to Me, Language Lessons), Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live), Nasim Pedrad (Chad, Saturday Night Live), Connor Ratliff (Dead Eyes, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Holland Taylor (The Practice, The Morning Show). Additional parts are performed by Frankie Corzo, Hillary Huber, David Lee Huynh, Sean Patrick Hopkins, JD Jackson, January LaVoy, and Oliver Wyman.

Interspersed throughout the book are three comic books featured in the story. This audiobook contains downloadable PDF of the comics from the book and a QR code for access to the original screenplay of Knightshade: The Lathe of Firefall.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Critic reviews

Affectionate and endlessly entertaining. Hanks writes with such tenderness about human connection and the magic of the movies (Richard Osman)
With a unique insight and a rare eye for detail, Tom Hanks delivers a stunning, emotionally satisfying tale about the art of storytelling. I never wanted the lights to come up. I could not put it down (Graham Norton)
THE MAKING OF ANOTHER MAJOR MOTION PICTURE MASTERPIECE is its own universe, complete with a sun, a cast of circling planets, and a limitless number of stars. Its gravity pulls you in and its far reaching, multi-layered, rollicking exuberance holds you in place. I would have been happy to live inside this book forever (Ann Patchett)

Great story, shame about some narration

A great story from Tom Hanks and I got used to the different timelines and locations. A good insight into the film-making business and a chance to learn a bit more about some of the ‘minor’ members of the crew. I could listen to Tom Hanks for ever but oh, some of the narration was woeful.

Brilliantly engrossing peek behind the curtain

This book was not at all what I was expecting, but I absolutely adored it. More than anything else, the recognition of kindred spirits, women that can get anything done and are who make the world happen. The relationships between Inez and Al and Al and Dais are where I lost track of time and space. I worked on set for almost two years right out of Uni, and this brought it all back. I loved it.

Like the title, this book is magnificent

If I'd bought a hard copy of this I'm not sure I would have made it to the end, but the audio version saw me late to more than a couple of appointments.

Early on I struggled to connect the strands but it kept pushing on and made me realise I'll never write that well.

Brilliant

Very different. Listen carefully as it is fast moving. Narration is like a Tom Hanks movie.

Complex, rewarding mass of lyrical nuance

The prose is as lyrically detailed as John Irving, with a heavy dose of the 'hot sauce' colloquialism of Tom Wolfe. Whatever it is, it is definitely its own magnificent beast.

It all comes together with such dramatic heft, you know it was all justified.

And it's enormous cast of characters is utterly necessary to sing to you the song of how a movie is made: the massive army of people all crucial to its success. Yes, you too, caterers! And fixers and doers!

I've been waiting for this novel forever. I ate up William Goldman's movie making books - his novels are nothing. Mr Hanks' novel is something; it really is something.

The Making of a Major Audio Materpiece

Brilliantly produced and perfectly narrated by Mr Tom Hanks. Not just an amazing insight into the making of a movie and its cast and crew but also a beautifully crafted story of popular culture born from small town America.

Latte-flavored and kind-hearted love letter

Tom Hanks reading a love letter to filmmaking has value in itself, but truthfully, it's a bit too kind, fluffy and sweet to really go inside your skin, even as a filmmaker. it shows Tom knows his craft but weirdly some stuff is a bit off, too, that you would think he would have gotten right.
